Software engineers like to say they're building stuff due to insecurities about not being the type of engineer that actually builds stuff

At work last week there was a 24 hour outage where users couldn't see their data on the mobile app. I found out today it was because someone used an AI agent to perform what was supposed to be a read-only query on the database. The agent couldn't read the data it wanted, and it couldn't find the admin password, so it... reset the database admin password. Which of course broke lots of things. If this happened to me, I would never let an AI agent touch the database again. But of course that isn't what they're doing. Now there's going to be "guard rails" and access control and roles and stuff. That probably will help, but the obvious solution is to just go back to doing things the old way. It's like the people who use AI to move things around on their computer and end up accidentally deleting their files. The only way to prevent this is to not let it play with things you can't stand to lose
