Vance’s face falls. It’s true, but I shouldn’t have said it. The thing is, Everland feels like a big city to me, but it’s not a big city by mainland standards. Maybe eighty thousand people live here, and half again that many live in a handful of small towns and camps around the island. If you work for the big companies, like Hawthorne or Second Star, you’ve got investigators on staff to help you out. If you work for the mob, you’ve got crooks to help you out. If you work for City Hall, you’ve got crooks to help you out.

Long story short, there are only two actual private detectives on the island, and I think just about everyone who knows about him calls Vance Carson ‘that other one.’

The Aurora Awards are an annual Canadian award given out to the best Canadian science fiction and fantasy novels, short stories, poems and fan works. This year, my second novel, Pawns and Phantoms, is eligible for an award, so I’m here to say that you should give it a try, and then ideally read it fast enough to nominate it for Best Novel!

Pawns and Phantoms is a hardboiled urban fantasy adventure starring Todd Malcolm, a bouncer and part-time detective’s assistant who gets thrown in way over his head. He’s working with Vance Carson, a wannabe detective, Glimmer Mop, a coolheaded fairy, and getting help from his best friend Holly and his possibly-requited crush, Emeka.
