Gran Lusso Coupé / 8-Series / Not Gonna Happen
It really is heartwarming to see that Pininfarina and BMW has garnered quite a few positive reactions from people at the Villa d'Este this weekend on their debut collaboration with the beautiful and stately Gran Lusso Coupé.
But it really annoys me a little bit that a lot of people are quick to judge that this car is a preview to a long rumoured return of the 8-Series. Let me tell you right now that it is not going to happen. Here's why and I will start with a really quick history lesson. The original 8-Series (E31) debuted on Frankfurt IAA in 1989. The same year that the original 6-Series (E24) died. The big coupés really fill the same market share, and BMW knows this. The only concept car that people can actually hope to be the "new" 8-Series was the CS Concept from Shanghai 2007, because it projected a 7-Series size car with a coupe flair. Naturally, this seemed to be the perfect "modern" combination at the time for an 8-Series after the rival's CLS successfully fill a gap between the E-Class and the S-Class.
But we all know that very concept car really ended up as the 6-Series Gran Coupé in the current BMW lineup. I believe BMW played it safe by downsizing the car into the 6-Series family, especially with the uncertainty of the current European economic climate.
However, if somehow BMW does channel the Gran Lusso Coupé into an 8-Series after it is provoked by the soon launched S-Class Coupé (ex- CL-Class), you now know that BMW will it's goodbyes to the currently alive and well 6-Series lineup. A shot on it's own foot, really.
