Crying Night

Last night it was a crying night

And surely weep did I

I wept for worry, love, and loss

And days gone creeping by

-

With unquiet mind and wrack-ed heart

And eyes made red and sore

I remembered who and what I had

And won't have anymore

-

Each misspent hour that came to mind

Made fresh the tear-streams flow

And likewise every bit of love

That has now nowhere to go

-

My heart it fell and falling broke

As a glass that shatters whole

And sure it seemed that I must pay

All sorrow's hefty toll

-

Alone in darkness then I fared

And needs must go afar

Through gloom of midnight winter-cold

That comes without a star

-

Broken, hurting, on I dragged

A stranger now to peace

And wondered whether to go on

Or halt and let it cease

-

Yet then I think I saw a light

Like a star or lamp ahead

Heard a whisper tell of One who could not

Be kept among the dead

-

And thinking of the story told

- That truest myth of all -

A part of it sprang to my mind

A truth I did recall

-

The One who made all and gives life

And speaks no word but true

Had lived, been hurt, and suffered loss

And wept for sorrow too

-

So not alone I found myself

And finding, hope retrieved

Since I recalled the Servant-King

Had loved, known hurt and grieved

-

And besides the things that He had done

I recalled His promise true

That surely there will come a day

When He will make all things new

-

That new world will no mourning know

Nor anguish, pain, nor fear

There safe He'll bring us home again

And wipe away our tears

-

Yet 'til His promise is fulfilled

We will weep here below

Such tears are not an evil thing

So let them, cleansing, flow

-

And trust the One who, loving, wept

Open that all might see

The same One by whose mighty word
