there’s a plate in her hand,  a sandwich atop of it.   she’s already eaten hers,  and she hands the plate over to him,  offering him a smile.   “’course.   i didn’t think you’d want to get rid of me so easily,” she muses with a small laugh, eyes rolling at herself.   she lets a moment sit between them,  mainly to let him begin to eat the sandwich if he wants to.    “how’re you feeling,  any better?”

because no one else will listen,  is what she wants to say.    because she doesn’t think that she’s important enough to be listened to,  she wants to add.   but she doesn’t;   instead she falls into a brief moment of silence, eyebrows rising as her eyes soften,  almost pleading but not quite there.   “because i think you’re the only one who can actually help me,” she admits instead.   “and if you don’t want to, that’s fine.   but that won’t change the fact that i think you’re the only one who’s fit for the job.”

a beat passes, rapunzel’s eyes lightly closing for a moment as she shakes her head.    she’s always one for games,  to be playful.   to take not everything so seriously and to have fun.    but she’s tired,  and she isn’t sure that this is a game that she wants to play.   “aj,  c’mon,  stop goofing around.   you will literally not believe the day that i’ve had,”  she starts, eyes reopening as she looks to aj.     “and i’ve been trying to call you for like,  most of it.    which i’m sorry for ‘cause i didn’t want to blow up your phone, or anything, but i got worried.”     there’s another moment that passes, and rapunzel’s eyes focus more on aj - noticing that he doesn’t have that familiarity in his eyes.   that this might actually not be just a game, something to laugh at eventually.    rapunzel’s jaw opens slightly,  holding her breath.       “is everything okay,  aj?”

she still isn’t sure what the mountain men truly want with them.   none of them are, she suspects, but deep down she hopes that they’re truthful in their reasoning for why they need the drillings.   that it’s meant to help them,  and that they  -  the once delinquents  -  can play an active part in helping them physically letting themselves go outside without instantly dying.   bending her legs at the knee, wrapping her arms around them, she looks at jay quietly.   hopeful.   “i know,” she nods, a hint of a smile.   “and i won’t let anything happen to you,  either.   i promise.”

It is a sudden yet totally welcome affectionate act, a one that brings a content smile to his features, and within a few seconds he returns it, arm wrapping around their shoulders, bringing them closer and squeezing gently, lips reaching for their head, a long, gentle kiss is placed onto the upper left of their head, their beautiful scent is breathed in as he does so.
