He could lie. He considers it, just for a split second, but he knows he’s not the only one having nightmares, and making it seem like she is won’t help. Besides, he’s made a promise to himself long ago never to lie to her, and he’s not about to break it now. 

“That day,” he says - because what else would he be dreaming about? Every time he closes his eyes, he can still recall every detail. The way it felt so strange to walk on land after months on sea. What she was wearing. The concern in her voice. Where they were standing. And so much red. It comes back to haunt him whenever his thoughts are unchecked, and being asleep leaves them all the room they need.

Corvo laughs at that, because she knows his sense of humour better than anyone else. 

Better than anyone alive, anyway. Jess was always so skilled at making him laugh, she made a game of it during court meetings. It seems the apple really did not fall far, in Emily’s case. 

“How about you get down from there and I’ll show you?” he offers, folding his arms - but if she does, there’s a tickling coming for her she’ll remember for the next week.

are there any specific qualities that catch the eye of the outsider re: those he finds interesting? is it as structured as that or is it a case-by-case basis sort of thing? (thinking of questions isn't my strong suit buT here's an attempt)

it depends on where that interest comes from!  if it’s an interest in where their path may lead, how important they may be for history and how there’s a slim possibility their choices might change the world for the better  ——   he is interested in them from a historical and humane perspective. it also makes them a potential marked.  there’s always a period (roughly a year or so) before he decides where he watches them and their decisions and weighs whether it’s worth risking granting power to someone who may bring forth complete chaos. most of the time they show tendencies he’s wary of, although the outsider may not always be aware of why his instincts disprove, but the most common one is the obsession with wealth and/or climbing up the economical ladder.  while it’s perfectly reasonable for someone in poverty to want to be comfortable, there’s an unusual amount of people who let coin be more important than their morals; and while there’s no real judgement there, they aren’t viable marked.  the people he marks need to not be swayed by coin and must be capable of refusing it. 

then there’s interest in the information they might possess. these people he approaches in disguise and tries to form a somewhat hollow personal relationship with. you’d be surprised at what one can learn from a man who sees someone beautiful with a soft, polite voice. the ethereal and unnerving aura surrounding the very androgynous outsider either intrigues or repulses, and whenever someone finds themselves attracted to him when there’s something he wants to know  ——   there’s a tendency to exploit that. there will be no kissing or touching, but more often than not lonely guards are extremely gullible and willing to say anything to have someone tell them how handsome they are. it doesn’t matter their position   ...   a man who hasn’t felt the touch of another become so desperate.  typically, they’re disgusting people and outsider feels little remorse crushing them. but if he respects them, his approach tends to be less condescending, less influenced by fleeting romance. if that’s the case, there’s a mutual exchange of information. sometimes, they will be granted bonecharms with minimal power  ——   of which their black market value matters most.
