[I rewrote the lyrics of "What Is This Feeling?" to be about Blossom Utonium and Princess Morbucks. Inspired by @simplysedusa. The dialogue before the song is to establish their dynamic here, which is distinct from both their canon dynamic as kids and Glinda and Elphaba's relationship in the play.]
A university dorm room. One side is neat and tidy with many academic supplies and photos of Blossom's family and friends. The other side is messier, taking up more than half of the room, and extravagantly decorated with luxury items, a huge vanity and racks of lavish clothes. But no family pictures. Eighteen-year-old Princess storms in and slams the door. She stopped being a supervillain two years ago out of pragmatism, tired of the negative consequences and lack of results, and interested in a safer, more lucrative career that would improve her reputation, But she remains a pretty bad person and widely distrusted.Â
Princess: It didn’t work!Â
At her desk, Blossom frowns.Â
Blossom: Really? None of the administrators even said they’d look into it?Â
Princess: They said I didn’t have a ‘valid reason’ and wouldn’t listen to me. Or my money! It’s getting so hard to bribe people these days. I don’t know what’s wrong with everyone.Â
Blossom: Maybe they’ve learned a lesson from all the felonies you committed.Â
Princess: And who caught me for the felonies, huh? (throws herself onto her bed) This is your fault. My life used to be perfect, absolutely perfect, until you came along and made it so… complicated.Â
She buries her face in her pillow at the last word to hide her blush. Blossom sighs and floats over to her.Â
Blossom: Well, they wouldn’t listen to my rational arguments either. So I guess—
Blossom: We’re stuck together.Â
Princess: (sitting up hopefully) What if I have my dad buy this whole university?
Blossom: Oh, please. We’ll just have to make the best of it.Â
She extends her hand to shake on a truce.Â
Princess: Aren’t you afraid that I could kill you in your sleep?
Blossom smirks, pulls a miniature laser pistol from under Princess’s pillow and crushes it in one hand.Â
Princess stands and squares her shoulders. They gaze intensely into each other’s eyes. Blossom elevates herself in her first solo line, so Princess literally has to look up to her.
Both: A fire burns within me like I’ve never known before
Princess: But of course I’ll get my justiceÂ
Blossom: But of course I’ll rise above it
Both: Though it’s truly an inferno, nothing less, yes
A fire burns within me for no reason but that you’reÂ
Princess: Unusually and exceedingly infuriatingÂ
And altogether quite impossible to destroyÂ
They retreat to their opposite walls. Blossom tries to resume her work, Princess preens herself in her mirror. But they can’t ignore each other for long.Â
Princess: What is this feeling, so sudden and new?
Blossom: I felt the moment I laid eyes on you?
Princess: My pulse is rushing
Blossom: My head is reeling
Princess: My face is flushing
Both: What is this feeling?
Meeting in the middle of the room, they reach out as if to caress the other’s face, only to clench their fists as the chorus begins.
Both: Let’s just say—I loathe it all
Montage of them living together and how their respective habits constantly clash. Princess revels in being actively disrespectful and frustrating. Blossom responds with passive aggression, like tidying her possessions without her permission.Â
Every little trait, however small
Makes my very flesh begin to crawl
With simple utter loathing
There's a strange exhilaration
In such total detestation
Now that it has stood the test of time
Grown with every fight and every crime
I know I’ll be loathing, loathing you my whole life long
In the cafeteria, Blossom is surrounded by her sisters and a crowd of their friends and fans. The table’s benches have no room to spare.Â
Bubbles: I’m sorry, Blossom, that must be so bad
Buttercup: One day with her and she would drive me mad
Both: It’s amazing how you’re coping
It’s a screw-up, it’s a scandalÂ
So our room is always openÂ
Blossom: Thanks… but it’s nothing I can’t handleÂ
Princess watches from a different table, stewing in envy and something sadder. She’s completely alone.
Sisters and Students: Bravo, Blossom, sharing your space
With such a vile, rotten nutcase
We can’t wait to see her take a fall from grace
Montage of their public lives on campus. Princess continues to resent the Powerpuff Girls’ popularity, powers and superhero status, while Blossom is jealous that Princess rivals her in intelligence and exceptional grades. For example, Blossom’s chemistry experiment earns high praise in a science fair, but Princess wins first place for inventing an advanced generator. Blossom glowers and Princess smugly rubs it in her face.Â
Blossom and Princess: What is this feeling, so sudden and new (Ensemble: Loathing, unadulterated loathing)
I felt the moment I laid eyes on you? (Ensemble: For her face, her voice, her clothing)
My pulse is rushing, my head is reeling (Ensemble: Let’s just say—we loathe it all)
Oh, what is this feeling? (Ensemble: Every little trait however small)
When Princess burns her hand in a lab accident, Blossom instinctively cools it with ice breath because she’s a hero and that’s what she does. Then she leaves in a blur of pink, flustered. Princess just stares in disbelief, cradling her hand to her chest.
Does it have a name? (Ensemble: Makes our very flesh begin to crawl)
The following scenes in their room and around the campus show that they still compete and annoy each other, but there’s a more playful, teasing spirit to it. They lie awake at night thinking about each other.Â
Both: Loathing (Ensemble: Loathing)
There's a strange exhilaration (Ensemble: Loathing)
In such total detestation (Ensemble: Loathing)
It's so pure, so strong (Ensemble: So strong)
Blossom: Thinking of her eats into my time
Princess: Putting me through this must be a crime
Both: So I will be loathing, for forever,Â
Loathing, truly, deeply (Ensemble: Loathing)
Loathing you (Ensemble: Loathing, loathing you)
My whole life long (Ensemble: Loathing, unadulterated loathing)
In the last few lines they’re studying side by side in the library, both blushing. stealing glances at each other, shifting closer… until Princess notices their judgmental audience and gets so uncomfortable that she whips out another ray gun. Blossom smacks it away, exasperated.Â
