CHAPTER ONE Two paramedics are lifting the body of a young woman out of a large, wooden tank of water and carrying her, quickly and with surprising smoothness, across the market square to their ambulance. I am watching them through the dusty window of the office, my hand across my mouth in case I vomit, my back to the wall and my head turned to the side. The window is so small I can’t see what happens next. But what I do know is that Kim is dead. And I know this, too, that I helped to kill her. Kim, my lovely, only, best friend. This memory is five years old. So is the photo of Kim in today’s newspaper. I am staring fixedly at the page. I have, as they say, seen a ghost. The newspaper’s computer has touched up Kim’s face so she has unnaturally dark eyebrows and outlined lips. But, as Kim might have said, not bad for five years dead. When the photo was taken, she was just twenty-seven years old and beautiful. And I was Maura.

Introducing Nowhere Girl
Ruth Dugdall has a few words to say about her upcoming novel Nowhere Girl, which is being published on 31st October.
The annual fair opened in Luxembourg this week. Schueberfouer is a major deal in the city’s calendar, and takes weeks to set up, then lasts several more. It is the sign of summer ending, an ancient tradition that has been modernised with lights and smoke and electronic prizes, a magnet for kids of all ages.
I hate it.
To be fair, I hate all fairs; I’m scared of rides, I dislike crowds and I refuse to queue for anything and Schueberfouer requires a love of all things fast, loud, and busy.
A trip to the fair was our first experience of Luxembourg, back in 2014 when my husband had just been offered work here. And it was my feelings of fear, of tension, that prompted me to pitch an idea to my publisher:
“What if I started my novel at the fair?
A teenage girl, stepping onto the big wheel never to be seen again.
What do you think?”
They thought I should write it. And into that Nowhere Girl I have distilled all of my anxieties about being in a foreign land, and the most primal fear of all, losing one`s child.
It is out in October, with events already planned at the two English speaking bookshops in Luxembourg. I’m as nervous as if I was on a roller-coaster, but it’s a ride I choose to take.
