Cribbage board, scrimshawed aboard the Ship Argonaut, early 19th century
She was a whaling ship from Sag Harbor New York from 1814-1832. The detailed carving is amazing with multiple ships, whales and alternating back drops of mountains on one side and a palm tree covered shores on the other. The ship Argonaut sailed from the Atlantic to the south pacific and arctic waters during the height of the whaling industry.

Story of a Cribbage Board
The Sapele Cribbage board is pretty much finish. This board was a LOT of firsts for me. It was my first time joining two separate boards together, my first time using a jigsaw to cut curves, my first time routing a line, and my first time using a plane to straighten an edge. It was also just a lot of work and got to see a lot of test play which helped me find holes that didn’t get fully drilled. At this point I have applied a finish so I’m not planning on any further decorative elements. But I’m pleased with how it came out.
I glued together a Lego cribbage board this evening. It will be a birthday present for my sister. She is fond of Legos and cribbage. I thought about making instructions, and letting her build it. It needs the glue though to be functional. Hers will be the white one. The black one is my older (non glued) prototype. I broke it down to remind myself how I pieced it together.
So for father’s day I made a mini, portable, light weight cribbage board with a case to store it, a deck of cards, and a pencil and pad in. Really it’s for both the parents but it was too much work not to count it as a present!
The board measures 8.75 x 2.75 x .625 and the travel case is roughly 3.5 x 2.75 x 4.75. A nice size for tucking in bags to go.
The board itself is made out of bass wood. I don’t know the exact weight, but it’s far lighter than the deck of cards is. Light weight was the main goal so very pleased with that! Each half of the e board is three piece of wood that I laminated together. They join with an insert on the one board and can safely be picked up while whole. I clad the three sides in a thinner bass wood that I stained a nice rich brown for some contrast. The whole thing is polyurethaned to protect the paint marking every fifth hole. Of course this meant a round two of drilling the holes- making it literally hundreds of holes I drilled. I knew it was going to be rustic considering I made everything with a tiny hand miter saw and a Dremel, so I left the coating light for some wear and tear to sort of add into that. The pegs are just made out of trimmed and painted nails.
The case is corduroy and a suit linen. The whole case is lined inside with the linen. While the front and the back have cardboard support between the two layers of fabric, the top sides are elastic, making it easy to pull the case wide to get the board in and out without sticking points. Inside there’s also a small snapped pocket to hold the pegs. The outer flap also snaps into place with two heavy duty snaps. It has enough for all the items with some spare should the deck, pad, or pencil change.
While there’s a lot I wish I had done better (and would do better if I had to do this again with all the things I learned) I know some of it was down to the tools or lack there of. I’m also trying not to side eye the case too hard since I was making the pattern up as I went. As a whole I’m really pleased I was able to pull this off and trying to keep that in mind!

Each whaleboat is carrying six men and at least two of the boats are fast to a whale. Foliate garland along perimeter. "John Schiff" at end and "J" and "S" above whaleship. Other initials, possibly "O", "F", "T" and "C" on underside.
