non-digi but do you have any tips for good sentence structure, I struggle with this a lot :( :( as in reworking sentences to leave out "to be" verbs (is/was/being)
Hi there! This is such a great question! Iâm not sure if Iâm qualified to answer, but happily, I think I know the name for what youâre describing, so I can point you to some resources :D
I think youâre asking about avoiding the passive voice. Generally, the more âactiveâ your prose is, the more clear and direct your sentences become!
Passive:Â The hamburger was eaten by Koromon.
Active:Â Koromon ate the hamburger.
Itâs been years since Iâve had a proper English class, but basically, youâre avoiding unnecessary insertion of direct objects. Hereâs a quick explanation, but if you google âavoiding the passive voiceâ or âpassive and active voice,â youâll find lots of help!
The passive voice isnât, you know... An evil no-no. Itâs especially useful when the actor isnât known, or when a writer wants/needs to be vague. But it can make prose clunky, bulky, and even unclear if youâre not careful.
Also, for good flow, itâs recommended to vary sentence length/structure.
I hope that helps! Congrats on posting a new chapter of your fic, please check out @crestofenlightenmentâs newest update to Mahoutokoro!
