It’s actually important to step back and make AUs for your Oc’s and stories, even if it’s just for you to step back and see your characters through a different lens or to come back to your story afterwards with more ideas of how to tie things together.
It’s kinda in the same vein as taking inspiration from other media’s when you’ve dug yourself into a rut of concepts, and it can genuinely make you think about who your characters are and what you might be missing or need to alter, and it can just be a fun exercise when you need a break from your plot, and speaking of plot sometimes it can do WONDERS to come back after crafting an AU and go ‘.... wait THATS why this seemed off!?!’
So go ham and ask yourself what kind of Among Us player your character would play, make a band au, “what if they all switched roles?”, make Concepts if they were in one of MANY anime’s, bro what’s their Homestuck godteir and why, how do they play Minecraft, go wild with coffee/flower/tattoo shop AUs
It can help but most importantly, they’re YOUR characters, you’re allowed to sidestep, go apeshit and have some fun, you might find some hidden gems along the way
