Further, feelings of increased happiness have been found to continue for up to a week following the dance session itself (Lovatt, 2021). Why is this significant? --The most common treatment for depression typically combines talk therapy with medication, but these findings indicate effective treatment for depression through dance that focuses on body movement and emotional expression. --In addition to decreasing symptoms of depression, dancing also motor, emotional, and intellectual brain functions. --Dancing also improves memory and slows the aging process. CREATE YOUR VOICE MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGN | APRIL – SEPT 2021 WEEK 3: 38% of women and 29% of men reported a deterioration in their mental health within the first 6 months of COVID, with youth specifically experiencing significantly higher rates of loneliness, anxiety, and stress since social distancing measures first began (Newall & Machi, 2020). Why is this significant? · Mental health includes our psychological, emotional, and social well-being, significantly influencing how we feel, think, and act. · The quality of our mental health also influences how we relate to others, make healthy decisions, and handle stressors in our lives. · Poor mental health can also lead to negative physical health outcomes, like increased risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Message to Youth: “[W]e are connecting Texans with mental health professionals who can help provide support to those who are feeling overwhelmed and stressed. It can be helpful to talk to someone when you are facing anxiety, depression and stress, which are not uncommon to experience in the face of a rapidly changing situation like a pandemic.” -Sonja Gaines What else do we know? · The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone’s mental health, especially for women. · The combined pressure of job loss and familial responsibility has increased stress. · The most significant predictors of poor quality of sleep and insomnia were depression, anxiety, and trauma scores, especially in women; · A higher empathy trait was associated with higher depression, anxiety, and trauma scores, indicating that people who were more anxious about the pandemic also reported being more empathetic towards others.
