“Hey, Did You Know I Have An Ask Box?”
How did you get started writing fanfic? Do you have any recommendations for people who want to get into? What are you working on after finishing "The Swan and the Dove" (which was enthralling, btw!!!)?
Hi, there! Â Thanks for taking the bait of my shameless plea for attention! ;)
As I think I’ve mentioned here before, I basically just started writing fan fic for Orphan Black, so the oldest story you'll find in my fic list was my very first one. :)
As far as getting into writing fan fic, I recommend reading a lot of it and seeing what appeals to you. I had done a lot of writing when I was younger, many years ago, but I had sort of given up on it until I started reading excellent OB fan fic. Fan fic has the room for creativity and distinct authors' voices, but it's a bit of a different animal from other genres, as it has canon and character lines that readers are usually familiar with ahead of time (not to mention various ships and headcanons.) If you've been watching a show (reading a book, etc.,) you have a wealth of plot points and personality traits to draw on. Read more fan fiction and figure out what it is about it that speaks to you. Is it very accurate, true-to-canon characters or plot, or is it more interpretive, taking large themes or small details and spinning off from them? Do you like a tight, action-packed style of prose, or one that's more elaborate or meditative? Romance, angst, adventure, fluff, smut, historical fiction, sci fi or fantasy? What would YOU like to read?
You can ask for prompts, remix a previous story, or come up with an idea yourself. What would YOU prompt someone to write?
Personally, I find it helpful to write down any ideas that come to me, then give myself a little time to ruminate on them. Am I still excited about it? What would the structure be? Do I have particular scenes I definitely want to happen? Does it makes sense when I go from point A to B and C? Can I do research that will help me know if my idea works, or that maybe will inspire me even more?
One more thing I can think of is having a buddy or acquaintance who's opinions and skills you trust to beta/edit your story. I feel that since I joined a group of awesome writers (the superlative OBFrankenfics), my writing has continued to improve.
However you are most comfortable writing is up to you. I prefer to be nearly or all finished with a piece before I begin posting it, while other people prefer writing and posting a chapter at a time. If you're just starting out, you might want to keep it to a one-shot at first. The rest is up to you!
As for what I'm working on, it's a multi-chapter cophine fic set in a different country in the near future (around ten years or so) and told from Delphine's POV. And that's all I'm gonna say about that!
I hope this is a little bit helpful. Thanks for asking me and making me feel like kind of a big shot. ;) And a special thanks for being so nice and supportive about my fic, commenting and reblogging and stuff. I notice and really appreciate it! :D
