so in the opening backstory sequence when you first open the game, it tells you the yoshis are in possession of something called the sundream stone. which has the ability to grant the holder(s) wildest wishes.

the game doesn’t specify exactly why the yoshis have it nor does it tell us what they use it for. now that we know there’s in-game evidence that yoshi does not pay taxes (seen in fortune street), this becomes much more plausible. so, it’s perfectly plausible that yoshi uses the sundream stone’s power to avoid taxes. 

in that same opening sequence, baby bowser and kamek attempt to steal the sundream stone, but it essentially explodes in the process and loses it’s powerful gems. 

of course, kamek and bowser could be after it for typical evil reasons, but these evil reasons were never specified other than they want it. to fit into what we have here already, kamek and baby bowser could easily be after it because they see that the yoshis don’t pay taxes and want to put a stop to it
