I’ve been cooking on this Bolaire discussion for days, and I think that a core part of what’s happening here is that Bolaire thinks of himself as a Thing, and that Things don’t have autonomy the way that People do. And it seems to me like he’s doing everything he can to prove that to himself. It’s why he’s not pulling hard on his plot threads, and why he’s constantly putting his life into other character’s hands (literally, by killing his host bodies and making the other characters pick him up.) The only time he really mobilized and exerted his control of his surroundings was when the status quo of his museum was threatened. Some part of him believes he’s a static, unchanging artifact in a display case that just can’t do what people do, because people have to Choose, and Things can’t do that. There’s every possibility that this is an intentional character flaw that’s going to have to be addressed in the narrative.
