Blue Royalty
I'm a Dodgers fan myself, but I know there are plenty of Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) enthusiasts out there. As for baseball teams named after birds, the ones that come to mind are the Blue Jays, the Orioles—and, of course, the Cardinals.

This gorgeous Blue Jay was caught by a cat and has a very long road to recovery due to two puncture wounds and ripped out tail feathers from the cat attack. Did you know that you can partially age a Blue Jay by the patterns on their wing? Although we cannot tell how old this bird is exactly, we do know that this bird is at least a year old. The black barring on the feathers near the thumb (the alula and primary coverts) is not found in younger birds this time of year. We hope that this patient continues to recover from the trauma so that it can spend many more years free in the outdoors.
oh to be an eccentric 17th century Duchess, the last of their line, who turns the families once opulent manor into a radical suffragette school and moves into their grandfather’s woodland folly to devote their life to breeding ever-more intelligent and talkative ravens...
Hand painted woodblock print, by German print maker Lisbet Schulz, c.1940.

Whisper to the Bark
Here’s a Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) just beyond the backyard—backyard-adjacent, if we’re being generous. It perched on a thick branch visible through a break in the forest, offering a glimpse of life outside the jurisdiction of my bird feeders. What was it doing, I wondered. My guess: hunting insects. They are omnivorous opportunists, after all.

Blue Jay’s Summit
Charlie lingers nearby, mopping the floor as he waits for us to head outside. Meanwhile, I remain glued to my work—what a bummer. I’d better hurry. During our outdoor excursion, yesterday, I spotted a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata). Its poised stance intrigued me, especially given that it was perched at the very top of a pine tree, a striking contrast to the world below.
