And this one. Having a print rack for my drawings at the pop-up exhibition meant I looked back through all my sketchbooks and discovered many things past and present… This one was recent though, from last year; the first lockdown when there was so much unknown, the whole world seemed to be “”cancelled”, and it seemed all we could do was sit outside 1 metre from a tree (with a partner or otherwise) and draw til our hearts were content lol. Branching out... the words weave and have no apparent beginning or end (sorry). 😅 ▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️ I’ve been thinking of contributing to the artist support pledge campaign for a while. It’s a way to support artists during the current covid climate... So artists share their work, with a price under £200. And if they sell £1k of art they pledge to buy another artist’s art. Now...for me, getting to that target is unlikely (very thankful to be employed as a, self titled, “HRtist” in Talent Management), when many artists will be really struggling just now. And I rarely price my art here... however I’m happy to say this drawing is £40 (£60 framed) and I’m happy to ship it (or deliver locally one day in the future)! 😅I know art is subjective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I’ve learned people sometimes are shy to ask on prices - art can seem inaccessible (hidden by #artspeak). This is an A4 sized drawing, on artist quality paper, drawn in pen (permanent, so it won’t fade in time). Oh, here’s Part 1 - forgot to share this first; I rarely do convention... which suits the following actually...🔸😀 So I discovered “Portrait Artist of the Year” #mypaotw 👨🏽‍🎨 have gone digital - with a weekly session, where artists (new or experienced) from all over the world can just join and create. It’s timed for 4 hours, with breaks of course, though I forgot about a work call I’d scheduled in the middle of it haha. This week’s portrait sitter was Bernadine Evaristo, a writer whose writing I did not know - but will definitely read now. Inspiring. She writes, what seems, alternative history - fiction, with a comical twist, but about serious subjects (such as marginalisation of black people in British history - “Girl, Woman, Other”, her latest book, won the 2019 Booker Prize). She’s never before sat for an artist...Really interesting to hear her talk as she sits for her portrait -“there has to be a mix of comedy and tragedy” in her writing, a sense of humour - my kind of thing. I love painting quickly, yet don’t paint many portraits, so this was a challenge but an exploration. They do allow you a week to complete- but I’d rather stop painting now while the sitter is there, even if virtually. I was most interested in representing some of her individualism.
