Okay so I love this video (and this creator, if you like linguistics at all you should check out Dr. Geoff Lindsey) but now I have changed the way I say covert: from co-VERT like how people say it now to CUH-vert like people said it previously. The thing is, I'm a high school English teacher. When I'm teaching The Lord of the Flies it's normal for me to say CUH-vert because Golding only uses it as a noun and that's how English emphasizes nouns anyway. But now when I use it as an adjective, students want to have this gotcha moment where they tell the English teacher she's pronouncing a word wrong. Little do they know, they have fallen into my trap where I can tell them that I actually am pronouncing this word correctly, and here's this cool story about how the word completely changed pronunciations and it WILL take up at least 10 minutes of class today.
