He would have tried to enlist until the very end of the war (even more so after he hears about Bucky being presumed missed in action), and it would have turned him bitter to be rejected again and again and again — a bitterness directed at himself, not the outside world. As for jobs, Steve would try to get by with his art, and I do imagine him becoming somewhat famous (locally) with maybe drawing little and quite sarcastic comics for a Brooklyn newspaper, which means he wouldn't have struggled too much with money, even with Bucky gone (though still very much part of the working class). His health is the main problem, though, and I doubt he'd grow much older than 35, dying of pneumonia on a cold winter morning: alone.
