“ju.”
you’d been staring at her for approximately thirty seconds, waiting for her to notice that you were very obviously trying to get her attention.
juju hadn’t looked up from her phone once, her thumb continuing to scroll as if you weren’t sitting right beside her.
“ju,” you repeated, shifting a little closer when she still didn’t respond. “juju.”
this time, she finally looked over at you, her eyebrows lifting slightly. “yes?”
you gave her your best innocent smile.
juju immediately narrowed her eyes. “no.”
“i didn’t say anything,” you argued, trying not to laugh at how quickly she’d figured you out.
“you didn’t have to,” she replied, putting her phone facedown on her leg as she leaned back against the couch.
you leaned forward slightly, clasping your hands together. “okay, but hear me out.”
juju stared at you for a moment before shaking her head. “i’m listening, but whatever you’re about to ask me, the answer is probably no.”
“can we get crumbl?”
she blinked at you.
“please…?”
“no.”
“why?” you asked, your face immediately falling as you tried to understand how she’d managed to reject you that quickly.
“because we don’t need crumbl,” she explained, picking her phone back up as if the conversation was officially over.
you sat up a little straighter. “that’s not true.”
“how isn’t it?”
“because crumbl is good.”
juju laughed quietly, shaking her head as she looked back down at her phone. “that’s not a reason.”
“yes, it is,” you insisted, leaning over the arm of the couch so you could look at her. “they have new flavors.”
“no.”
you gasped dramatically, placing a hand against your chest. “so basically, you don’t care about me.”
that finally made her look up.
“that’s a crazy thing to say when i literally bought you food yesterday,” juju said, laughing as she watched your dramatic reaction.
“that was yesterday,” you replied, as if that somehow completely changed the situation.
“and?” she asked, clearly amused.
“today is a new day.”
juju shook her head, trying not to laugh. “you’re so irritating.”
you folded your hands underneath your chin and gave her the biggest doe-eyed expression you could manage. you knew it was ridiculous, but you also knew juju had a hard time saying no when you looked at her like that.
she stared at you for a few seconds before looking away. “don’t do that.”
you blinked innocently. “do what?”
“that,” she said, gesturing vaguely toward your face. “you know exactly what you’re doing.”
you smiled, refusing to drop the expression. “what?”
“i’m not falling for it.”
you batted your eyelashes at her as few seconds passed.
juju sighed, finally shaking her head as she reached for her wallet. “fine.”
you immediately sat up. “yes!”
“but you’re paying me back,” she added, holding her hand out for her card.
your face immediately brightened as you took the card from her. “you’re the best.”
“i know. please, go get the cookies.”
you were already grabbing your shoes, still smiling as you looked back at her. “what do you want?”
“i don’t know,” juju said with a shrug. “get whatever looks good.”
you nodded as you headed toward the door, already planning out exactly which cookies you wanted. “i’ll be back.”
“don’t take forever.”
you looked over your shoulder with a grin. “you just sent me with your card. you can’t complain after.”
juju smiled and waved you off. “just go.”
⸻
the crumbl storefront wasn’t particularly busy when you walked in, which you considered a blessing.
you pulled out your phone and immediately started looking at the menu.
you knew you couldn’t leave without getting the classics.
one milk chocolate chip, one semi-sweet chocolate chunk, then you spotted the cotton candy cookie sitting behind the glass.
“oh, we’re getting that,” you muttered to yourself, immediately adding it to the order.
then came the harder part: debating the rest of the flavors.
you eventually settled on a brownie batter cookie and a cookies & cream cookie because, if you were going to make juju review them on camera, you needed some variety.
you scanned at the box when they handed it to you, immediately pleased with your choices.
perfect.
you carried it carefully back outside before pulling out your phone and texting juju.
you: i got the cookies! you can’t tell me you aren’t excited.
juju: eh
you: ju… you know you’re excited
juju: i think i’m quite the opposite 😓
you: whatever, i’m omw.
you slipped your phone into your back pocket and headed to your car.
⸻
when you got back, juju was still sitting on the couch.
she looked over when you walked in, immediately noticing the box in your hands. “finally.”
“it hasn’t even been that long,” you replied, setting the box down on the coffee table.
“felt like it.”
you smiled as you opened the box. “look.”
juju leaned forward, her eyes immediately moving over the cookies. “okay, these actually looks good.”
you smiled triumphantly. “i told you so!”
juju laughed as you started arranging everything. you grabbed your phone and propped it up against a small stand on the table before looking at her.
“ready?”
juju shook her head but moved closer anyway.
you checked the camera angle, then leaned toward the phone and frowned. “okay, wait. we need better lighting.”
juju immediately reached over and moved the lamp slightly. “there.”
you looked at the screen again and smiled. “perfect.”
“you’re welcome.”
you glanced over at her. “okay. now, are you ready?”
“no,” she answered immediately.
“too bad.”
you sat back and hit record.
⸻
“hey, guys!”
you smiled at the camera before gesturing toward juju. “we’re doing a crumbl review today because somebody—” you pointed at her, “—finally agreed to get some.”
juju immediately laughed. “she begged me, guys.”
“that’s not the point.”
“that is literally the point,” she replied, looking toward the camera with an amused expression.
you shook your head before pulling the first cookie toward you. “okay, we’re starting with the milk chocolate chip. classic.”
“classic,” juju mocked you.
you broke yours in half and held your piece toward the camera. “look at that, guys.”
you and ju did a small cheers before taking a bite.
“well?”
you chewed thoughtfully before nodding. “that’s really good.”
“rating?” she asked.
you looked at her for a second before answering. “eight and a half.”
juju nodded slowly. “i’ll give it an eight.”
you immediately looked offended. “eight? you’re crazy.”
“it’s good,” she explained, reaching for another piece, “just not a ten.”
you shook your head. “okay, next.”
⸻
the review had completely fallen apart… due to the cotton candy cookie.
you were supposed to be giving actual ratings, but instead, you and juju had spent nearly five minutes arguing over whether a cookie could be considered “too sweet.”
“it’s literally a dessert,” juju pointed out, laughing as she licked a little bit of frosting from her thumb. “it’s supposed to be sweet.”
“not that sweet,” you argued, shaking your head as you looked down at the cookie in your hand.
juju laughed again. “there’s no way you’re complaining about sugar in a cookie.”
“there has to be a limit of how much sugar a cookie can have.” you sighed and looked at her. “what’s your rating?”
“nine.”
you immediately frowned. “if that’s a nine, th—”
“next cookie!” she yelled, a grin spreading across her face.
⸻
by the time you got to the brownie batter cookie, juju had gotten much more into the review.
she took a bite, paused, and looked directly at the camera before nodding. “okay.”
you giggled. “that’s a good okay?”
“that’s a very good okay.”
“rating?”
“nine and a half.”
you immediately looked offended. “nine and a half? you didn’t even give the milk chocolate chip a nine and a half.”
“because it wasn’t,” she said simply, taking another bite.
you shook your head, still smiling as you reached for another piece. “fine. nine and a half.”
she smiled, clearly satisfied with herself. “exactly.”
you reached for another piece of cookie, and juju quietly slid the box closer to you.
“you want the rest?” she asked.
you looked at her. “you’re giving it to me?”
“yeah,” she said, shrugging. “don’t eat all of them.”
you smiled. “thank you.”
she shook her head, but she was still smiling as she watched you take another bite.
⸻
when you finally stopped recording, you looked at the camera and laughed. “that was way longer than it needed to be.”
juju smacked her lips and leaned back against the couch. “cause you talk too much.”
“you talk just as much.”
“i don’t.”
“you literally argued with me for ten minutes about cookies.”
“because you were wrong.”
you laughed as you picked up your phone. “whatever.”
you started looking through the footage, deleting the parts that were obviously unusable.
“should we post it now?”
“why not?”
you smiled. “okay.”
⸻
an hour later, the video was up.
you didn’t think much of it until you seen multiple notifications from tiktok.
you opened the comments, and the first one made you giggle.
“why do they act like an old married couple 😭”
“the tension is crazyyy”
you covered your mouth, trying not to laugh. “oh my gosh.”
juju looked at you. “what happened?”
“oh, nothing.”
“show me.”
you turned the phone her way.
she read it and immediately started laughing. “they’re so dramatic.”
“i ship them idc”
you smiled as you continued scrolling through the comments. “at least they liked the cookies.”
juju leaned over to look at the screen again. “what did they rate them?”
you laughed. “someone gave the brownie batter a ten.”
“see?” juju said, looking entirely too pleased with herself. “i was right.”
you nudged her shoulder lightly. “don’t get cocky.”
she laughed as she reached for another piece of the brownie batter cookie. “too late.”
you kept scrolling as the comments continued piling up.
apparently, the cookies weren’t the only thing people were interested in.
and judging by the number of people already asking when the next review was coming, you had a feeling this definitely wasn’t going to be the last one.
