AKA, the Roman Holiday AU, set vaguely in the 1950s, wherein:
Courfeyrac is an up-and-coming journalist who can't quite seem to get up-and-coming;
Cosette is a photojournalist, a style icon, and Courfeyrac's partner in crime as well as in minor journalistic assignments;
and Marius is the crown prince of a minor European nation who just so happens to be asleep on Courfeyrac's couch.
good morning gray ace marius pontmercy how are you your gf and your bf doin today
Requested Courfiusette (long) Drabble!
So the awesome @proceduralbob requested Corfius or Courfiusette for that âsend me a ship and Iâll write a drabbleâ challenge.... and this got to be a little longer than a drabble, because I do love me some awkwardly in love with everyone Marius. (and I do have ideas for a followup chapter. Should I???)
Canon Era (but playing very loose with setting and timeline details), PG rated (for kissing) no death, no TWs
Marius paced nervously in the apartment he shared with Courfeyrac. Well, Courfeyrac would say they shared. Because the young man was kind and good and generous. A true gentleman in every sense of the word. Courfeyrac would never dream of implying to anyone, no matter how true it was, that Marius simply lived in the apartment Courfeyrac paid for. Marius had no more right to call it home than a mouse might.
They did have a mouse, a tiny darting guest that appeared when either of them forgot to put away the morningâs bread, but neither young man had the coldheartedness required to set a trap.
Marius rather envied the mouseâs ability to hide, as he waited for Courfeyrac to return from class. He was terrified of asking his friend for further help, and yet, he greatly needed the help.
He was always in need of help, always asking, never offering, and it made him feel more wretched by the day.
The door clicked open. Courfeyrac smiled upon seeing Marius. âAh! It is the abbot! All done with the work for the day?â
âI, um, yes.â
Courfeyrac blinked, noticing the glass full of cut flowers, and the old blanket draped over the simple table theyâd hauled up from a corner one day. âWhy, are there flowers on the table? How lovely! And here, I have dinner to go with them.â
Heâd picked them today, taking only what he was allowed when he asked various owners as he passed by the homes. He didnât wish to steal, but he had no money to offer his friend any sort of thank you. âYou donât have to shareâŠâ
âNonsense. A meal shared with friends imparts a seasoning no chef can add.â Courfeyrac laid out the fresh cheese, grapes, and pastries heâd picked up on his walk home. âTell me what you translated today, if it is at all interesting. If it is dry, do make something up instead.â
Marius laughed, all his nerves forgotten. Courfeyrac had a way of doing that, charming out the fear from him, like a man might sing a snake out of a basket. It was in that spirit, that late at night, Marius finally asked his request. âCourfeyrac. I, I must ask your assistance once more.â
âAnything, Marius.â He reached out, to touch his hand. âI have meant what I said. You are a dear friend to me. What I have is yours.â
âWill youâŠâ Marius wet his lips. âI.. wellâŠâ
âWhat on earth has you so flustered?â Courfeyrac laughed and reached behind him. âHere. Letâs have some wine. Grantaire left a bottle the last time he visited.â
Well, heâd more so passed out without finishing all his wine, but Courfeyrac considered it all the same thing, Marius supposed. It was a kinder way of looking at the matter, certainly.
He uncorked the bottle and poured them each a glass. The wine stems were elegant, real crystal. One of the few things Courfeyrac had yet to pawn, because, according to him, they had belonged to a great aunt he had been very fond of.
That made Marius feel guilty, thinking of his own aunt heâd not spoken to since heâd left the house heâd grown up in. But he could not stay there, not with a Grandfather who had lied and hidden things from him. Which was why he must not hide things from his friend. He took a sip. âI was wondering if you might give me lessons in kissing.â
It was hard to say, harder still to keep looking at his friend. Courfeyrac was so handsome, so often joking of his collection of women, of course heâd be an expert at the craft of kissing. But who would ever want to kiss a wretch of a man like Marius?
Courfeyracâs eyes lit up, the only change of his expression. He did not laugh, nor turn angry. Instead, he said, âdo go on, my friend.â
âItâs only. Well. Iâve met her. The Lark! Cosette. Her nameâs not Ursula. I was wrong.â
âA blessing indeed.â
Marius blushed, and drank more wine, which only served to bring color higher on his cheeks. âAnd I realized. Well, Iâve never kissed a soul.â
âOne normally kisses anotherâs lips, dear lord of bubbleland. Not their soul.â
âYes, yes, I know.â
âOh? I thought you were not the expert on this topic.â
âItâs an expression of speech is all I meant.â
âAnother point to consider is that when one is kissing, one is not often speaking at the same time.â
âFelix Jean-Luc Courfeyrac, you are driving me mad!â Marius cried, half-laughing, half shouting.
Then, quite suddenly, the way lightening breaks across a grey sky, something happened. His friend leaned across the small table, tugged on Mariusâs collar, and when he was still laughing, kissed him.

(this booby is madly in love with Cosette and Courfeyrac)
Canon era Courfiusette for the last day of rare pairs week, painted with this wonderful ficlet by @aporeticelenchus in mind where Courfeyrac is a writer of trashy novels and which I love A Lot. I used these 1830s hairstyle compilations as well as Dumas, in Courfeyracâs case, as references. As always, the terrible waistcoat designs are mine and we can all be glad I didnât try to be a designer in the 19th century.
I live for Marius with literally no verbal filter. I mean, consider it: He's been dating Cosette for a while now, and they're happy. They're the kind of couple who can comfortably talk about pretty much anything. So, when he starts to wonder if maybe he might possibly be bi, she's the only one he tells. That is, until he walks into the Musain for a meeting one day (holding hands with Cosette), sees Courfeyrac wearing ridiculously tight skinny jeans and a fitted t-shirt and says- quite loudly- "/Damn/, I like guys." The whole room goes dead silent. Everyone stares. Then, suddenly, Cosette snorts. "Oh, thank god. I thought I was the only one appreciating Courf's ass." All the others are beyond confused. Courfeyrac looks delighted.
courfiusette
my love let me tell you how much i love this? also this is kinda modern au but with some canon era themes
so courf and marius have been very close for like⊠a while ok? so like, they move in together (bros) and they just kinda dance around each other for a while until they finally get their shit together and start going out
courfeyrac brings marius to a meeting, then he promptly gets shut down my ferre (âto be freeâ = the ultimate mic drop) but courfeyrac wants him to feel welcome with his friends so the rest of the amis try
eponine ends up meeting cosette again, and both of them are like freaking out cause finally someone understands exactly what they went through as kids
they end up being brosâą and eponine is like âguys lemme show you this awesome chick from my childhoodâ and brings cosette to meet everyone
all the amis + chetta are like âwow sheâs coolâ and marius starts to fall for her
he freaks out cause he hasnât lost any love for courfeyrac but heâs also starting to feel something for cosette and heâs like screaming inside
he also is like fuck who can i turn to cause my best friend is my boyfriend
he ends up talking to eponine and sheâs like âok you know how joly bossuet and musichetta are together? thatâs called polyamory, and i know cosette is ok with itâ
marius goes home and tries to casually bring it up with courf. obviously it turns out as more of a âI THINK I LIKE COSETTE BUT I LOVE YOU AND IDK WHAT TO DOâ
courfeyrac just laughs and says itâs all ok, he really enjoys spending time with cosette and he loves marius too and they should try to make it work
they end up asking cosette out to lunch and they just have so much fun. courfeyrac and cosette bond over outfits and thatâs when courf starts to fall for her
by the end of the lunch marius manages to ask her out for the both of them and she says yes
cosette moves in about a month later and courfeyrac goes out to get a bigger bed
they all have matching socks and binge watch brooklyn nine nine
marius wakes up every morning wondering how he managed to be with the two people he loves most
gosh i love this so much ok???
