1. A webseries that left you feeling like your heart was made of pure sunshine but also with the slightest tinge of bittersweet sadness?
I was a little sad when I finished Black Girl in a Big Dress because I enjoyed it SO much and I wanted more episodes!! Luckily they’re doing a season 2 which makes me so chuffed ;)
Also Lizzie Bennett Diaries because the journey was so lovely and the end felt like the end of an era.
16. A webseries that everyone else loves but just doesn’t click with you, whether bc of representational stuff or pacing or just the plot and story not really dragging you to the edge of your seat with suspense?
The only character in Couple-ish I found consistently engaging/relatable was Amy, although there were aspects of the other characters/plots I liked.
Highrd Help was rather disappointing, in regards to POC rep as well as the writing & plot development. I didn’t get the hype, tbh.
17. A webseries that IS really popular and you’re almost annoyed you love it too bc it is that good but you kind of wanted to be that annoying hipster who hates the one thing everyone loves bc it gives you a sense of self satisfaction you never received from your colleagues:
Maybe Dr. Horrible? Or Carmilla (full disclosure: I enjoyed the first season way more than the second and haven’t even started the third, lol).
Character: Dee Warson
From: Couple-ish
Representation: Nonbinary, bisexual
Their Importance: Dee is a relatable character who simply happens to be nonbinary- their pronouns and gender are not treated as a big deal and even though Dee does face transphobia from their parents who don't accept Dee's identity, the show makes it clear that Dee is just like every other character- a person who wants to find happiness. They are also one of the only nonbinary protagonists in media, and as a person who identifies as nonbinary themself, I was surprised to see how realistic they are as a character - Couple-ish even has a scene where Dee is asked what being nonbinary even means and they give a clear explanation which can, in my opinion, teach the viewers quite a lot.
The scene is particularly important because of the emotions we can see on Dee's face- they are afraid of being judged or rejected, but when they aren't, their reaction is a smile. There are more scenes like that- in fact, the whole show, which has mostly LGBT+ characters and writers, provides a sense of positivity about the LGBT+ community. Pretty much everyone gets a happy ending- no one dies and the final episode leaves the viewer with a feeling of hope. Dee's bisexuality is also addressed in Couple-ish, Dee openly dates both men and women and the word "bisexual" is said out loud, which again, is not very common in media.
