Coumarine is a cozy seaside port/hillside cliff city that sits at the northwest part of the Kalos region, both halves bridged together by a monorail system that's unique to this place only.
The scent of the air changed depending on which side of the city I was walking around in. The seaside air carried the salty yet invigorating scent of the expansive ocean, while the air at the hillcrest carried a refreshing fragrance from the plant life that lined the edges of the steep half, or maybe that was just pollen floating in the air, because I got a stuffy nose while I was up there.
You can get the best view of the port city from up on the bench area near the monorail... rail! It's kinda frightening how high up I am, but it does allow me a better scope of the vast sea, even so high up I can't even see my home. I must be very far away, otherwise Mt. Coronet would be plainly visible.
The monorail ain't just the only interesting part of the whole city, on the seaside there's a small marketplace that sells incense, which I ended up buying the Sea Incense from for my Empoleon Scalder. He couldn't get enough of the way the smell always made him feel at home no matter where he was, and it even sharpened his focus in battle to secure victory!
Last thing I want to mention is the gym I battled inside of. It definitely was a step up from Gardenia's gym in terms of layout and gimmicks! Here it was essentially a jungle gym where you had to choose between paths of hanging ropes that led up a massive birch tree trunk, leading to the study chamber where the Grass gym leader Ramos waited for his next challenger.
At the end of the gym battle, I was treated to a fun way back down to the entrance, a big whirling slide! However I forgot I would have had to land on my feet at the end so I ended up falling on my back end, definitely hurt quite a bit, but I walked it off just fine!

So I have just skipped over a piece of writing bc it needs more editing than I have patience for at the moment, but the basics is; Jay and Jayden continued travelling together as far as Kalos, at which point they were gonna split again
 but uh. Language barriers.
Also Jay has a slightly... obsessive streak in approaching the gyms. Sheâs using them as a coping mechanism for Wild Shit going down in the main plot.
 Itâs not healthy.

I leave the harbourmasterâs office and glance down at Vulp. âWell.â That had been tricky.
Vulp washes her ear and yawns.
âI need...â to learn a new language real fast. I glance about at all the signs; Kalosian first, then Galarii, then Kanjin. And it would probably drop the two I knew once we got further into the region, away from the tourist points. âMaybe a translator. Dâyou think we can hire one like a tour guide...?â
Vulp stretches and pads out in front of me.
âSure.â I follow her. Wouldâve been clever to have realised this before I left, but forethought ainât my forte. Neither are languages, really. âMaybe...â
If I knew someone here, that would be â Jayden. Jayden has been here before, he said so. Did he mention knowing the language...?
âHey, Vulp. Find Jayden.â He canât have got far.
Vulp sets to it and darts out into the crowds.
I race after her, slipping around people as best I could, thankful I hadnât brought everything with me to sign my ship in.
Jayden hasnât got far. I find him in the market, looking at food for travelling.
âHey!â I stop beside him, slightly out of breath, and pull my bag up higher. âIâve - hit a snag.â
He pays for the small bag of berries and offers me one. âAnd you think I can help?â
âWell...â I shrug. âNeither Brith or I can speak Kalosian, and I donât feel like relying on apps and broken Kanjin to... do this. For translation.â
Jayden quirks a half-smile. âAnd youâre hoping I can?â
âYou did mention it. We got Galarii in Snowpoint. Or â you know, from my grandparents. So that I can do, but Kalosian... not so much.â
âMaybe you should have gone north first.â
âEh.â I shrug. âBeen there with the family before, visiting the homeland. Never got the chance for Kalos. But... can you help?â
He pockets his wallet and slips the berries into his bag. âAnd travel with you some more?â
âYeah, I know, you probably want to do your own thing, itâs been a hell of a long time stuck together-â I wrinkle my nose, half-turning away. âWe can get by on the universal language of hand-waving.â
Jayden laughs and comes to my side, walking us back towards the harbour. âItâs fine. Of course Iâll travel with you.â
âReally? That would be amazing.â
âSure.â He grins. âConsider it payment for the ride.â
âUnnecessary. You gave me folklore.â I snort.
âI canât pay for all my rides in folklore.â
âEh.â I shrug. âIt works for me. I can cover meals while weâre here-â
âWeâre taking that in turns,â Jayden says, interrupting me for the first time I can remember.
âWell I never.â I clasp a hand to my chest. âYou can be rude!â
âAll in the name of fair play,â he replies. âNow, you need to pick up your things...? Where are we heading first?â
âYeah, need to get my stuff together. And... the rest of the pack.â I glance down at Vulp. âI did not get far.â
Jayden laughs. âAlright. And then?â
âLumiose.â I glance sideways at him. âIâm planning on challenging the league, so I need to register. If thatâs alright? It gives us a structure to travel by, and I get different fighting styles and you should get more flying types, so... that follows...?â
âThat sounds good.â Jayden smiles. âYou donât have to worry about catering to my interests, you know.â
âI mean â why else would you be here? New flying types? All in the name of research for Skylaâs gym?â I turn sideways away from him, sliding between two people waiting in line for something. âOr is this just like a holiday on the cheap for you, so you can skive off work?â
âYou got me.â Jayden laughs. âJust one request, when allâs said and done.â
âName it.â I turn on my heel to face him, still walking backwards.
âIâm not your opponent for battling when you need training.â
âHey, watch it!â The gruff voice snaps in Kanjin.
I duck as Jayden grabs me, pulling me out of the way of dock workers carrying heavy equipment. âShit! Thanks.â
Jayden lets me go as soon as theyâre past and Iâm steady on my own feet again. âAlso, watch where youâre going.â
âFine, no battling. Eyes on the road.â I flash him a smile over my shoulder. âItâs cool, you know? You donât battle. I know that.â
âThank you.â
âBesides, I donât wanna know how I stack up against my friends. That just gets awkward.â
âHavenât you beaten Candice...?â
âYeah, but that was her gym team. Not her actual team.â I wave my hand. âOfficial business. World of difference.â
âI see.â
âYou know, I donât think you do.â I narrow my eyes at him, but only for a second before I grin. âBut thatâs cool. Youâre here for birds and translation purposes only.â
âYou got me. Those are my travelling terms.â Jayden dips his head as we reach my ship.
âScore. Shouldnât be long.â
Brithâs waiting on deck with my pack, standing against the railing. âHeâs back?â She follows me into the cabin.
âI need a translator,â I reply. âBecause neither of us know Kalosian and apptranslate can only go so far.â
âAnd human company is good for you.â
âPshhhh.â I flap a hand at her, thumping my travelling rucksack onto my back. âOw. Itâs not all that different having you around, you know.â
âTravelling with humans is different from travelling with pokemon.â She folds her arms, leaning against the open door.
âSure.â
Sesser flits onto my shoulder.
âEveryone in!â As the pack crowds at the door, I return them to their pokeballs and tuck them into the bag that I then tie at my waist.
Soise, Brith, Vulp and Sesser are the only ones I leave out, although Garâaq and Lapwing are sprawled over the bows of the ship.
âYou two!â
They look up as I yell.
âDonât do anything dumb and reckless â yes, Garâaq, that is aimed at you. Nothing unless there is harm threatened to the ship and that upon it, clear?â
He croaks out an affirmative call.
âKeep an eye on him.â I point at Lapwing.
She nods and growls something low at Garâaq.
Brith snorts as she follows me from the ship to join Jayden on the docks, who already has Soise and Vulp underfoot.
âOk, shall we?â I tilt my head towards the harbour, the town beyond.
âOnto another league,â Brith murmurs. âHow long will this one take you?â
âDepends how often we stop to look at feathers.â I shrug, and set off. âWhich you may ask us to do as often as you like,â I say to Jayden.
âPlease do,â Brith says. âShe needs to remember to breathe.â
âI know how to breathe.â I scoff at her, smiling. âBesides, I havenât been here before. Weâll do tourist things! Iâll stop and smell the roses or whatever. Itâll be fun.â
âIâm sure it will.â Jayden smiles. âLetâs go get âem.â
