I’ve done a few reviews of music coming out on Orange Milk Records and because of their diverse catalogue of musical oddities I have yet to be disappointed. 'COULDWORK’, the latest tape by Foodman is a mix of sound collage style noisescapes and minimalist dance compositions that takes the cake for being among the weirdest and most outstanding from the entirety of the Orange Milk catalogue.
Like many vaporwave releases - in which Foodman draws a lot of comparisons to - the compositions of 'COULDWORK’ read like a feed of subliminal sound collages. Minimalist footwork tracks like ‘Hitou He Go (秘湯へGO)’ can be found following the visceral sound collages of ‘Kawazakana’ and ‘KOUGEKI ROBO’ in which densely layered electronics clash with found recordings. Tracks like ‘浮世離Vapor’ and ‘核 feat. Aristophanes 貍貓’ act as noise infused electronic pieces that show Foodman’s range at flawlessly working in experimental arrangements into these works.
All of the aforementioned makes sense when taking into account that this tape is a “semi-compilation album”. It can be easy to spot the irregularities in style - tracks like ‘PEPOPEPOKEN’ bring a weirdly refreshing change of pace to an already strange collection of songs with its live sound approach to improvised drums, pulsating electronics, and vocals. Despite of the overwhelming range of sounds that come through, ‘COULDWORK’ hardly ever sounds accidental thanks to Foodman’s use of story telling and well arranged compositions.
Regardless of a few monotonous moments (’mosquito＆ clap’), Foodman takes queues from the ever-fetishized micro-genre and makes something that was once tired and overdone into something uniquely not for everyone.
