Chapter 7
With every bus journey, Bluebell got better at it. She still tucked herself behind Thomas’ legs, forcing him to stretch out, but she would willingly get on board. Going into the city was much easier when she learnt that Vincent was always waiting at the other end - she liked him enough that she would get on the bus for him, and that said a lot.
By the end of the week, she seemed to know when their stop was coming up and would be eager to disembark. When they were in the office building, she would dash up the stairs and Thomas would struggle to keep up. He wondered if he could risk unclipping her leash and letting her go on ahead once they were inside, but he’d never had her off-lead outside of the home and was too anxious to attempt it. Perhaps it was another step in their progress to aim for the following week.
With each day, Thomas improved too. Not in navigating public transport like Bluebell, but when being faced with Vincent’s company and attention. He still caught himself looking too long or leaning too close, but he wasn’t the stammering fool he had been in the first days of having to contend with his feelings. At least, he liked to think so.
