Karaka Berry

Also known as kopi, koroi, chalacha, hore hore or New Zealand laurel

A tree and fruit prized by both the Moriori and the Māori people. The karaka fruit is an aromatic berry that has sweet edible pulp and a poisonous kernel in the middle. The Māori learned to process these kernels, making them safe to eat and an important food that was prepared ahead of winter. Kererū tend to feast on these berries as well, but they're dangerous and toxic to other animals, including dogs and pigs.
