To be honest, there was a lot that happened in this past ep, and the cliffhanger is one thing. But the other think that i cannot stop thinking/laughing about is Caleb and Veth murdering the other guards and Jester just standing there bursting into tears which she chats with the one guard she managed to charm first.
So same, and I still honestly don’t know if this is Jester feeling bad that there’s a decent chance this guy will get killed, feeling bad that there’s a decent chance this guy will get fired, if she’s suddenly realizing how murderous Caleb is being (this is a whole digression that I won’t get into here but much like Veth and Caduceus sometimes Jester just Does Not Get the specifics of how traumatized Caleb was by his experience, which like, he tried to shelter her from it the most and she’s a pretty sheltered person already so makes sense), or, my favorite, she is abruptly realizing she is going to have to be the responsible and level-headed one during this entire encounter.
hi there! do you have any advice on how to end a one shot? I'm sort of struggling because I've reached the end of the story i wanted to tell but there is more that could happen and i don't really know how to trail off neatly. like a, we are now back in familiar territory and so you can probably assume most of what would follow, sort of ending. you do really good one shots a lot so i wondered if you had any thoughts? thanks!
ahhhhh hmmm great question! figuring out the right point to end a one-shot is tricky. lemme think if i can put into words what I usually do.
I guess as a general statement, I try to end one shots on a closing note that leaves the audience ruminating on the most important implications of the story. I think that’s more important than covering every detail you could theoretically cover.
literally just instantly followed you because of "the ball eaten" i literally laughed out loud so hard
bad puns are a specialty so welcome and thank you
Out of curiosity, what are the problems you have with mermaid aus? You mentioned it in one of the director commentary asks?
(Sorry for taking so long to answer this!)
The long and the short of it is, mermaid AUs attract my squicks. I’ve seen heats and mating cycles used in a few of them, and while they’re not super prevalent or inherent in the AUs, it’s enough for it to be a mark against them. Consent issues tend to crop up a lot in AUs where one half of the ship is some type of magical creature, and when the main pairing of a romance-centered story has serious consent issues, it sort of ruins the whole experience for me.
But by far the biggest problem I have with mermaid AUs is the fact that so many of them feature merpeople suffering from abuse or denial of their free will and personal liberties. Sentient creatures being hunted, sold, or otherwise treated like animals is one of my biggest squicks in fanfiction tropes. Slavery, “pets”, trafficking of any kind, the works. It literally turns my stomach when I see it, and unlike mating cycles, this trope does seem to be inherent in mermaid AUs. I see stories where they’re poached, hunted for sport, or captured and put in aquariums for humans to gawk at, and I’m genuinely tired of seeing it because it seems to be the norm with mermaid AUs.
“Where the Ocean Meets the Sky” exists because I decided to write the kind of the mermaid AU I wanted to read, in which they aren’t constantly at each other’s throats and subhuman treatment is the exception, not the rule. Tensions between fantasy races can exist without the non-humans getting poached for their body parts or netted and sold to zoos, and conflict can coexist with balance of power and agency. Trust me, it makes the resulting romances, star-crossed or otherwise, a lot less uncomfortable for readers.

Oh nick,,,,,,, im following ur tsubasa livblogs too so im practiced with the no spoilers rule but like,,,,, Oh BOYY.
I appreciate the suspense greatly! Thank you!
I feel like back during the hight of homestuck there was a ton of debate over why someone would be derse vs prospit, because it was never explained.. so its all speculation? I remember the two prospit kids made their beds and the derse kids did not. but i think its super up for interpretation. Maybe think of it from a story angle? The derse kids are gonna be exposed to the horrorterrors and all that, while the prospit kids have access to the future/past-seeing clouds of skaia.
ugh of course it was never explained. i was hoping i had just missed it hhhh oh well youre right! i can do what i want its my au hahdusahdnsakj
