Caption: “Rock Island's eastbound Cornhusker from Omaha approaches the 16th Street Tower, where the joint Rock/NYC crosses the Illinois Central's Iowa mainline. Not long afterward the E7, E8 (639....) power will enter LaSalle Street Station. However, the large contingent of TOFC between the power and the coaches will probably be set out at Twelfth Street Yard.”

Rock Island business car "Lake Michigan" rides the end of the departing westbound Chicago-Omaha "Cornhusker", banging across the Santa Fe/GM&O diamonds by Union Depot.

Rock Island's westbound Chicago-Omaha "Cornhusker" approaches Union Depot behind FP7, E7b, E7 (409....) The "Cornhusker" was the remnant of the "Rocky Mountain Rocket" to Denver. Just like the other Rock Island long distance survivor, the Minneapolis - Kansas City "Plainsman" (a remnant of the Minneapolis - Houston "Twin Star Rocket"), this train had a very short time remaining. To keep the balance sheet on these operations a little more livable, lots of "piggyback" trailers rode behind, normally punctuated with a caboose. But it looks like this one had more than just a caboose on the hind end, with business car "Lake Michigan" riding the end.

Chicago, 21MAY'67
This pair of E-units (631 was an E6 trailed by an E3) is backing the Chicago-Omaha "Cornhusker" from 47th St. coach yard past the 16th Street tower to LaSalle St. Station, preparatory to its departure. The diamonds it just crossed are those of the Illinois Central's mainline to Iowa, and the "St.Charles Air Line" that was jointly owned, and ran over all those bascule bridges one sees in southward views from Roosevelt Road.
