I have a debt to pay.
I was born with it- it pulls at my heart, thrums in the very marrow of my bones, and claws its way into my throat.
My mother was an Elsewhere University alumni- she fell for a Corner Witch, and she longed for a life with her.

A member of the Gentry, or perhaps a retired Corner Witch (if such a thing exists), works in the admissions office. In every acceptance letter, every pamphlet or poster, there is a hidden phrase belonging to her. Few students can find it, fewer still can understand it, and almost no one can pronounce it. But those who can, it’s believed, enter the university with a gift greater than Sight.
Not knowing better, I had stared at the corner witch with a fresh pair of eyes, undaunted by the horror of the campus. My heart flutter. "I want to be like them," I'd breathed, a wish on lips that had never known the feeling of saying things unbidden. Be careful what you wish for, all ye who bear witness; being a corner witch is a wonderful aethestics, but midterms are hell on wheels.
There’s apartments run by the school near the border of the property and they’re where a lot of the students either stuck or those who don’t want to leave.
The paint on every windowsill and doorway has been eaten away by salt, yet some of the residents don’t seem quite human.
One resident who calls herself Fe (pronounced Iron) is a known Cornerwitch. Many charms hang from her necklaces and bracelets. She may give you one if you need it or ask nicely but be sure to return it or give one of your own.
After all Iron and Salt don’t work on human.

The Corner Witches grab your hand. "I have nothing to offer," you say. But they shake their head, take away the Gift you were given, and give you a bracelet in return. "Turn it three times to escape," one of them says. You nod, knowing better than to argue. A week later, you find yourself a bird, flying away from the wreckage. You are safe. You have escaped. You thank the Corner Witches by being a watchful eye, now, in your bird form. They understand.

They say, "Seek the corner witches for a good deal" but that is not what they're also known for. Seek and ask for help with love, with a suitable payment. A lock of your lovers hair will do, but the more sentimental the item, the more the corner witches will help. Seek the corner witches, and seek their love.
Wishes and witches and wanting things.
I had an idea for something in EU but I have to ask first: Are there any members of the Gentry who try to trade things like the Cornerwitch? Or are they entirely about the whole vague deals type thing?
Yes, many of the Gentry are willing to strike deals, but they operate in a different arena than the cornerwitches do, and so rarely come into conflict.
There is a rotating cast of cornerwitches on campus, although it’s a nebulous group held together more by common interest than any feelings of fellowship. The unifying theory is that there is power in the old stories, and therefore it should be possible to break stories down to their individual components and put them together in ways that benefit you.
The development of the ?science?, at least as far as it applies on campus, is a sideways thing. But critically, it seems that cornerwitches themselves cannot create these themselves; they must be traded, and traded fairly. Others must be the ones to argue the Last Breath out of the stub of a cigarette, the Magic Mirror out of a smartphone, the various fragments of fairytales out of the debris of everyday life.
Inevitably, the stories the cornerwitches build from these things have marvelous and magical byproducts, and it’s these things that future cornerwitches use to purchase new components. There’s almost always one or two hanging around the known and shifting trading post (usually behind the gym, but they’ll mark the wall up with chalk if it moves for some reason) with pocketfuls of marvels, waiting for customers.
