STEVE  ISN'T  WRONG   ;           everything     has  changed.           most  everything  that  he  remembers  from  the  old  days  does  not  hold  true  anymore.               there  are      similarities,         but  there  are  days  when  bucky  laments  missing      his  place  in  history,         the  way  he  should  have  come  home  from  the  war  and  had  a  family  of  his  own.                  it  had  always  been  what      he'd  imagined      when  he  imagined  a  future    . . .         and  with  steve  right  across  the  street,      or  in  the  same  apartment  building.               bucky  misses      aspects      of  those  days,        the  way  things  had  been  easier  in  so  many  ways.             financially  they  had  struggled,       and  sometimes  went  to  bed      hungry,        but  most  of  the  time  they  had  managed,       and  bucky  didn't  have  to  worry  about  things  like  war  or  the      burden      of  all  those  he  had  been  forced  to  kill.                  it  was  a  simpler  time.               and  if  he  thinks  about  it      hard  enough,       bucky  can  ignore  the  background  thread  of      longing      that  had  accompanied  him  all  that  time. 

finally  steve  leans  back  and      relents      with  his  pursuit,         and  bucky  breathes  a  subtle  sigh  of  relief  as  heat  and      weight  on  top  of  form      and  wrists  moves.                  he  settles  the  remote  back  between  them  and  turns  to  look  at  friend  at  blond's  words.                changed  more  than  he's  let  on      . . .         it  feels  almost  as  though  steve  is      trying  to  say  something      without  saying  it.                 bucky  gives  a  little  nod,        knowing  that  feeling  but  also      unsure      where  steve  is  going  with  this.                                   ❝    we       all         change,         it's       a       part      of      life.    ❞                                     and  bucky  isn't  expecting  the  next  topic  steve  brings  up,      flush  returning  to  cheeks.

❝    plenty        of      fish,    ❞                                 he   mumbles,         embarrassed      that  he  even  has  to  explain  himself.            damn  sam     ;           bucky  will  give  him  a  good  punch  in  the  arm  for  disclosing  such  a  secret  to  steve.                   maybe  he  thought  bucky  had      already      told  blond  ;       either  way,         bucky  doesn't  appreciate  it.                                   ❝    it's         nothing,         really.                  haven't       met       anyone         worthwhile.                kind     of      just      a      waste     of      time.   ❞    

𝑻𝑯𝑬  𝑳𝑶𝑶𝑲  𝑻𝑯𝑨𝑻  𝑺𝑻𝑬𝑽𝑬  𝑮𝑬𝑻𝑺                  at  comment  is      noteworthy  ;          cheeks  flush  and  steel  grey  eyes  flicker  with      something  akin  to  desire      before  bucky  is  shaking  his  head  and  rubbing  metal  hand  over  features.                                  ❝     i’m          not         answering       that,    ❞                                      he  says  finally,        and  motions  to  the  tv.                                ❝     let’s      just      see       if      we      can        skip       it,    ❞                                  and  he’s  fumbling  with  remote,        cheeks  still  hot  with  blush  at  the  insinuation.                   yes,         he  loves  this  show  ;               no,        he  didn’t  intend  to  watch  one  of  the  sex  scenes  with  best  friend      sitting  so  close.                                    ❝     don’t      you       laugh       at     me,           rogers,    ❞                                     bucky  adds  while  he  insistently      does  not  look      at  whatever  friend’s  expression  is  doing.
