cornelius and barnaby are NOT 30 and 17. i refuse to entertain that idea. 28 and 19 is weird enough. they act like idiot partners in crime that are the same age. maybe cornelius is a few years older. but what 30 year old man hangs around a 17 year old that much? michael crawford said it best in the unreleased interview from 1968, where he called it "obscene"-- "33 year old men don't go around with [17] year old boys."

"put on your sunday clothes" sounds better when it's slightly sped up, as it is in the film. i also like the harmonies more. it feels a bit too slow in the stage version.

i like the lines in "elegance" that were added for the film, and i like that it gives barnaby and minnie more of a chance to shine.

i don't dislike that they have "it only takes a moment" take place in a courtroom, but i like the movie's solution more.

"so long dearie" should not be that slow. it has no right to be that slow. i don't know what jerry herman was thinking when he made it that slow in the stage musical. it doesn't hit the same. dolly is having her big moment of "i told you so" and horace is left reeling.

peace and love and light and sunshine, but carol channing's voice is not for me. i respect it. i know she was an absolute sweetheart and powerhouse and i love her for playing the role into her 70s, but i have to admit i prefer barbra's tone. (i don't have any issues with bette's singing, but nobody can beat barbra imo.)

charles nelson reilly and lee roy reams and gavin creel, i love you all too, and i love that three gay men have played my king cornelius hackl, and gavin specifically your voice was brilliant and the world was lucky to have you. however--and i think this is my bias speaking because the film was the first version i ever heard--michael crawford wins in my heart. his voice is so... weak. and thin and reedy. and that, to me, is cornelius hackl.

lastly, the stage musical doesn't feature cornelius stimming for 2 and a half hours straight, and that's a travesty. nor does it have a horse almost eating his face off.
