Carla Rebecca Corley was a 14-year-old girl from Birmingham, Alabama. She was about to start the seventh grade and was close to her family, particularly her sister. She suffered from epilepsy and needed to take medication to control her seizures.

Carla was last seen at her family's home, watching television at night with her mother. When Carla's mother decided to go to bed, Carla stayed up. That was the last time Carla was seen again.

At 4.30 am, Carla's mother woke up and found the doors to the apartment open, chairs pushed back and things overturned. There was no sign of Carla and all of her belongings including her shoes, money and medication had been left behind. Carla's belt was found outside her home.

A month before she went missing, Carla was abducted and raped by a group of adult males for three hours at a nearby lake. Carla was thought to have had information that could have got the men convicted but an official police report was never made. A week before Carla's disappearance, those same men went to her home and attempted to get in but were unable to. Carla's family believe the group of men who previously abducted Carla were responsible for her disappearance and that they murdered her.
