So yeah, I've been playing around with this game for a bit. Just thought I would throw this out here, so others could enjoy this a bit more easily(I'm looking at you, Core)
Anyhow, it's highly recommended you play this game with an actual controller. You can technically play with a keyboard but after looking at the controls it seems a little spread-out to me. Keyboard users have some extra keys for some moves where Gamepad users need to combine buttons, though. I'll be listing both the keys as well as the Gamepad buttons as such: 1/Z, 1 being the Gamepad button and Z being the keyboard equivalent.
This is gonna be hella lengthy, so I'll put this under a read more.
1-Time, pretty selfexplanatory, if it's a timed battle, the side with the most health wins
2-Map, self-explanatory, do mind the white line, that's the arenas boundary. Getting stuck there at the wrong moment sucks.
3- is what I like to call your move gauges. In this game every move you make is somewhat limited in how often you can perform them. Guard depletes for however long you hold the button, stalls for a moment and then regenerates. Attack is drained after initiating a melee attack, note that it's drained completely even if you didn't do a combo. The other options regenerate once a moves full stock of attacks has been depleted(indicated by the circled number beside it)
4-Your party
5-Your enemys party, the little tab on the right and the arrow beside the HP bar tell you who you're locked onto
6-I have no clue, this gauge only appears during Single battles. I think you can get a SynchroAction(explained later) where you can switch in your Assist character for your actual character, so it may be for that. I haven't unlocked such a skill yet, though...Or found another explanation.
7-Syncro gauge, let's you activate SynchroDrive and AccelSynchroDrive, fills by damaging your opponents and being hurt, taking damage fills it faster
8-Your characters HP
9-Stamina, you need this for Steps and Burstdashes, 10 'points' max, refills fairly quickly
Controls
Moving is done through arrows keys and D-Pad/Left Analogstick respectively
Ascending- 6/S, potentially usable for dodging long range attacks, since those seem to usually move on one altitude only, somewhat slow though, making a Step is usually the better solution
Descending- 8/D, see ascending
Step, DoubleStep- moving+1/Z, makes a short dash in the input direction to avoid incoming attacks(-2 Stamina), press the button again for a second dash at the cost of one more Stamina, can be used to cancel attacks
BurstDash-hold down 1/Z, makes you fly straight towards your opponent at high speeds, can be controlled through arrow keys, gets pretty disorienting then though, initial Stamina cost: 2 points, increases with distance traveled, pushing the button again cancels the dash
Guard- 2/X, protects from all attacks, automatically makes you face your targeted enemy, doesn't seem to work against attacks from the back
Shot- 3/C, shoots weak bullets at your opponents, if you hold down the button you begin charging, if you hold it down until it's finished charging(indicated by a purple flash coming from your character) and you release the button you do another attack called the Charge Shot, both attacks are usually vastly different
Attack- initiates a melee attack, the button can be mashed for a combo(up to 5 attacks, I think), combining attack with the arrow keys yeilds different attacks, some people can even charge it for another attack
LockChange- 5/Q, switches targets
Trigger- 7/A, is used in combination with various other buttons; Trigger+Shot makes the TriggerShot, Trigger+Atack makes TriggerAttack, both can be charged. Trigger+Guard activates your Extra; if you have a keyboard you can also simply use T for T.Attack, Y for T.Shot and U for Extra
Activate SynchroAction- move Right Analogstick/NumPad 2,4,6 or 8; explained below
Activate SynchroDrive/AccelSynchroDrive- push the Right Analogstick/NumPad 5 when Synchro gauge is full, can be used to avoid hitstun
Drive Attack- Trigger+Step or I during SynchroDrive
Accel Synchro Drive Attack- push the Right Analogstick/NumPad 5 during Accel Synchro Drive
Change Order- 9/Return, changes your partners behaviour, there is: ノーマル-Normal, 集中-focus on one enemy, 分散-Scatter, 回避-Avoidance
Open Ingame menu- 10/Space
Kickturn- Step+Guard or for keyboard users, makes your character get in a battle position, if you get hit during a specific time window you'll dogde the attack and move behind your opponent, tricky to pull off but handy
Note that these are just the general controls, some characters may have variations of these(like Youmu not having a charged T.Attack or T.Shot, or Yukari having a second level for her charged T.Attack)
Special game mechanics
Flash battle
if both you and your opponent dash towards each other at the same time you initiate a Flash battle. A gauge appears in the middle of the screen, one half filled with red , the other with blue. Just mash Shot, Attack, Step or Guard. If you're faster then your opponent the gauge fills with more of your colour. Once a set time's up the sequence ends and the one with less color in the gauge spins madly out of control, giving the other a wide opening. Personally I have yet to have this happen to me in a real battle.
Synchro Drive
unlocks SD Attack and increases damage output by ~20%
Accel Synchro Drive
special form of Synchro Drive, activation depends on the game mode you're playing:
In Single Battles, if your HP falls below 50%, simply activate Synchro Drive
In Team Battles, your team member needs to have activated Synchro Drive already. If you activate your Synchro Drive then, both of you will automatically switch into Accel
Accel increases damage output by ~30% and gives you access to the AccelSD Attack, which makes insane damage
Synchro Action
this is basically what you would call either an Assist or a Team Attack, depending on what mode you're playing.
Sometimes, usually when your in the middle of a combo, for a second you have a circle appear, like this:
If you're fast enough to push the right Analogstick in an available direction(unavailable directions are greyed out) your partner will help you out in various ways, even in Single Battles.
There are four types of Synchro Action:Attack, Protect, Assist and Counter. You can choose from various SAs in the charcter select screen. However, you'll have to unlock most of them first.
Also, I've no clue how to trigger these on purpose. Attack SAs seem to be triggered through combos/damage but otherwise I've got no idea
Note that this isn't all there is to the game. For example, Youmu has a special cherry blossom beside her HP bar which fills by damaging opponents and does... something when it's filled.(propably increases damage but I'm not gonna check) I also had a green ghost floating over my characters head once.(no, I wasn't playing Youmu then)
