the vault dweller usually walks quite a few paces behind the ghoul , if only because she doesn't quite trust him. now their companionship is only based on an understanding. they're finding the same thing but once they find it , they need different answers. maybe she's still leverage for those answer , it doesn't matter. they have the same goal.

the desert has a buzz itself , various noises and sounds , but this time the buzz is seemingly getting louder.

she stops , shifts in semi-circles back and forth for a few seconds before she spots a couple large and black blips heading in her direction. the gun was already pulled out , but now it's aimed. they're coming in fast. if she's to be quite honest , the only kind creature she's met thus far is the dog up further with the ghoul. they're still coming closer.

         Filly was turned into a graveyard in a matter of moments, all due to a man who seemed equally vicious as he was mutated. Lucy had never seen anything like it before as she approached with her tranquilizer gun held firm. “I’m going to have to ask you to leave him alone. Now, I acknowledge that I’m unfamiliar with your circumstances. But, at first glance, your treatment of this man appears unfair, and I’m obliged to intervene.” Just as she was about to pull the trigger, a red string formed around her wrist – and linked to his, “Huh?” Large brown eyes blinked, confused at the sudden onslaught of information she had to deal with.

        Now, it wasn’t that Lucy hadn’t heard of soulmates. It was just a rarity, especially since the bombs dropped. In the Vault, it was considered obsolete. Marriage was more for procreation and recreation than love. After all – she was willing to marry a stranger for those reasons. She assumed she would settle down with a perfectly fine man, have 1.5 kids, and live a happy life. Everyone in the Vaults lived with the knowledge that their mate was 99.9% not going to be their perfect match. Now she stood before a man who didn’t even have a nose, who had just killed half the town – whom fate decided was for her.

        It was a dream position, assistant to the Cooper Howard. Her father was an absolute rabid fanboy of his movies. Truth be told even Lucy had a crush on him when she was younger. To now be working so closely with him was a thrill. Even if he was going through a particularly rough time. Oddly enough, because of that she supposed – they got close.

       Mr. Howard had a lot to organize, especially with the divorce. It had been extremely taxing and public. One couldn’t help but feel for the man. Time was spent running between lawyers and his agent. In between all that she took care of his daily life and need.

       One night after their work was done, Cooper invited her to his home for a drink. She’d been there a thousand times, but somehow this felt different. For a fact she knew that Janey would be with her mother. It would be just the two of them, it made her nervous, but in the best possible way.

        As the night went on, they shared laughs. Lucy became more relaxed. Her body moved closer to him on the couch. It felt like she’d known him her entire life the ease with which they conversed. It was any girl’s dream. When he stated, ‘There is always a wild side to an innocent face.’ A blush creeped from her cheeks to her ears. Bambi eyes cast downward into her drink. Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest thing to sleep with your boss, but before she could stop herself she responded, “Want to find out?”

         “You know I’ve been thinking,” Lucy paused, “About the first time we met. When that woman said your kind wasn’t welcome. She meant, ghouls, right? Why aren’t ghouls welcome in certain places? As long as you aren’t feral….That doesn’t seem right….You are still people.”
