Unova, definitely.

Unpopular opinion time: Hoenn is actually my least favorite region, and Gen 3 has been one of my least favorite generations as well. Only Gen 1 ranks lower for me, and that’s because it hasn’t stood the test of time (it used to rank higher in my books). The reasons for Hoenn being my least favorite are threefold;

I hated the region design. There were very few good places to level, and the abundance of water routes, especially after the sixth gym, made it a pain to level up certain Pokemon.

It had no connectivity with Gen 1 and Gen 2, so the Pokemon I painstakingly raised back then were lost forever, and I was forced to start from scratch.

It was the first to feature a “local” Pokedex at the time, so it made it seem as though they removed a large number of Pokemon from the game, many of whom were favorites of mine (Venusaur, Gengar, Scizor, Tyranitar…). Keep in mind that at this time, there was no news of Colosseum, XD, or FR/LG, so it did not seem as though those Pokemon were obtainable.

Meanwhile, Unova had tons of content, and an ever-evolving story thanks to the advent of B2/W2. Plus, B2/W2 had one of the best varieties of Pokemon available to you, and they were available very early on. Plus, thanks to Audino being on pretty much any route, if you really wanted to you could grind at pretty much any stage of the game. Good plot, lots of variety, lots of content. I have a fondness for Unova.
