– Giraffe Necked Weevil – So I'm walking along with my boy when I happen upon a giraffe necked weevil. I take a couple of photos and my son says, "What's that?!" I point my finger at it and say, "I think it's some kind of giraffe necked weevil." As i'm pointing at it the little weevil just up and flies onto my finger tip. My son and I exchange glances and we start laughing. Only having one hand now, and perhaps limited time, to adjust the settings on my camera I quickly fire off two shots without changing anything, hence the noise in the image. Once the little giraffe flew off I looked up and there was another one with a neck 2-3 times the length of the other one! However, as soon as I took a shot it flew off and I only got a blurred image. Turns out that chances are that was a male and the one in this image a female. Hopefully now that I know where they are I can go back and try get some better shot of them. :) ID: Trachelophorus sp. – Nom, nom, nom – I absolutely love bug/spider hunting with my five-year-old boy. Not only to show him the wonders of the macro world, which others become unnecessarily scared of, but also because he is the perfect height to see things that I would have to get on my hands and knees to look for. This is one of his finds from a walk we had a little while ago. What's even better is that he takes the hunt very seriously and doesn't speak too loud, or make any sudden movements to scare away my subjects. I've got him a camera already, but just need to wait a little longer to get him a proper macro setup. Hopefully he keeps a keen interest in macro and continues to develop his skills. – Bird poop weevil – This little weevil was tiny, ± 4mm, and I seriously thought it was a bird dropping with legs when I spotted it. As soon as I neared it folded its legs in and placed its snout down and had the little weevil been like that when I first saw it I promise I probably would have just kept on walking, because it really just looked like a piece of bird poop. I had to use extension tubes and go in as close as I was able just to get the image you're looking at. I apologize if it looks a little soft on the focus, but I still felt it was worth posting.
