The best thing about fashion is that you are free to experiment and explore as much as you’d like. Of course it helps to know some basic tips that will help you look your best. Guest contributor Marina De Giovanni shares some staple fashion tips that will turn you into a fashionista!

We’ve all been there. Over-accessorised, underdressed and hobbled in heels. It’s very easy to make a fashion mistake if you don’t know the dos and don’ts so here are 10 staple fashion tips every woman must know.

ONE KNOW YOUR COLOURS

Know which colours will complement you the most to avoid making the wrong purchase. If you have cool undertones, white, black, grey, silver, and shades of blue work best for you. And if you have warm undertones, opt for shades of yellow, gold, brown, green and red.

TWO KNOW YOUR NECKLINE

The neckline of your clothing is supposed to flatter your face so make sure that it suits you.

THREE DON’T OVER-ACCESSORISE

Who doesn’t love accessories, but be careful not to overdo it. If you’re wearing too many rings people won’t know where to look, same goes with bangles, and if you’re wearing statement earrings then don’t also wear a bold necklace, and vice versa.

FOUR WHEN IN DOUBT, OVERDRESS

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to wear to an event, especially if there isn’t a dress code. There is nothing worse than showing up underdressed, so when if doubt just overdress. Over dressing has never done any harm – if anything you’ll be the best dressed!

FIVE A WALLET IS AN INVESTMENT

Nothing is more embarrassing than a shabby (but not chic) wallet, especially if you’re sporting a designer handbag. A wallet will last you at least 10 years so invest something of exceptional quality that is a classic style, rather than seasonal.

SIX THINK TWICE WITH BELTS

The purpose of a belt is to hold your pants up, or give you a waist when wearing something loose. Too often I see women wearing tight clothes with belts – which is pointless and doesn’t look flattering, so think twice when you pull a belt on.

SEVEN DON’T BARE ALL

Overexposure is something I see way too often! If you’re showing your cleavage, cover your legs and if it’s your legs that are on show cover up on top. Simple.

EIGHT STOCK UP ON STAPLES

Know your staples and stock up on them; from the classic white shirt, to the little black dress or trench coat. Your staples are classic pieces that are the foundations of all your outfits so invest well.

NINE DON’T DO WHITE UNDER WHITE

A commonly overlooked error women make is wearing white underwear under white clothes. White emphasises white, so opt for nude and no one will see a thing.

The skin has hues that show through the surface colour of your skin. These hues are called skin tones (or undertones) and they are divided into Cool (pink, red or bluish undertones) Warm (yellow or golden undertones) + Neutral (a mix of warm and cool undertones). Even when your complexion seems to change due to varying light or tanning, your skin tones remain the exact same, which is why it’s so…

I have been writing posts for the last three months on skin tones and what they are, but it just occurred to me that you may not understand what the heck I am talking about.

So I have decided to put cool and warm tones side by side so that you could see the difference in the tones in hopes that once you go out to shop for makeup or clothes, you will be able to choose accordingly.  

Teals, a homage to blue and green can be tricky if you do not know what you are doing. How can two cool colors be warm? They can in fact have a warmer tinge them, usually you can tell because they are richer in tone those with more yellow tones. Remember the rules, if you have gold or olive tones you want to wear warm tones to balance out your color and if you have warm, red under tones you want to wear cooler colors to keep you from looking ruddy and muddy.

  As you see the teal to the left has a richer warmer hue than the teal to the right. The one to the right seems to be cooler to the eye, almost yellow in tone. Most colors will follow this order.  

Plums, a homage to red and purple, with a scoch of yellow--on the cooler end. These are easier to choose because plums are a mixture of red, a warm color and purple a hybrid color. The more blue added to the plum mixture, the cooler the color gets and the more red added the warmer it gets. Check out my example below.

  Reds, now here is where it gets tricky. When it comes to red, you have the opposite of everything I just told you. If you have yellow undertones, you will be looking for more blue/reds.. blue reds give off a purple tone which is the opposite of yellow. This combo gives your skin a nice glow, living up the the coolness to your tone. If you have red tones then you will steer more towards the yellow/orange reds. These reds keep your warm red under tones from being overwhelming. They cool the red in your tone down.

    All in all, I have been doing this job for 9 years now and I can honestly say, that even though I am no longer an active makeup artist and stylist, I truly enjoy playing with color.
