Five minutes ago I proved you can meet the coolest people by the simplest of things.
A visiting worker was at the door, which I opened for him. Noticing he had a cast on his left hand, I asked him what had happened. He remarked he was skiing up in New York and had gone off balance and landed wrong, tearing a ligament and dislocating his thumb.Â
From there it branched to a few other things before he mentioned he used to be a professional HORSE RACING JOCKEY. Having always loved horses and been interested in horse races, this was a first for me. Yes, the guy -was- short but I had thought nothing of it until now. We got into talking about it, me learning there was a jockeys union and that this guy had been a professional racer for 18 years before he had to retire after the third surgery to fix his broken back.
I'm not a people person by a long shot. In fact, I prefer to keep to myself. But if I had never answered that door, or said hello, or had never 'been nosey' I would never have learned something about someone with such a -cool- past. I guess it pays, as much as it takes away, to open up to someone and ask the questions you might be hesitant to ask at first, or even talk to them.
Cause you never know who you might meet.
