keep on seeing people online mention this interaction. or at least i kept on seeing it a bit ago. anyways its just simple layers for what happens if clone enters as a copy of yue and we kill the clone to the legend rule. (CR 613.1 for the layers)

we have a trigger to return our clone to the battlefield tapped as a moon land. as our clone enters it wants to copy any creature. this happens in layer 1a. in layer 3 our clone gets named moon, in layer 4 it becomes a land, and in layer 6 it gets {T}: add {C}.

if we were to, for example, have clone enter as a copy of ruin crab we would have a clone that looks like the following.

despite yue's reminder text, our moon crab clone is not legendary as it has no effect that would make it legendary. so even when yue dies the legend rule wont apply to get rid of one of them.

you animate a fumarole and try to switch it p/t. then once its a 4/1 your opponent casts a spatial contortion targeting it. can you save the fumarole?

you dont need to save it. it would live anyways.

p/t changes happen in layer order and all in layer 7. the layers are written in CR 613, with CR 613.4 describing layer 7.

The distinction lies in whether or not a spell or ability's effect modifies the characteristics or changes the control of a card or permanent.

109.3. An object’s characteristics are name, mana cost, color, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, abilities, power, toughness, loyalty, hand modifier, and life modifier.

If a resolving spell or ability does change characteristics or control of one or more cards or permanents, then the set of objects it applies to is determined and locked in when it resolves. It will continue to apply to those objects and only those objects for its duration.

If a resolving spell or ability doesn't change the characteristics or control of any object, then it's "setting up a rule" and that rule will apply to all relevant objects when it's checked.
