Roanoke tends to be warm year-round and if the climate cools and it rains more, many vegetables like tomatoes and peppers will not grow well. If people continue growing them instead of plants that will grow easily (which if they do not compare current weather to last year will happen), they will not have enough food and so buy food like everybody else and there will not be enough for everybody. In some regions, the livestock shelters protect animals from heat, not cold, and some breeds of animals do not fare well in cooler weather because they do not have enough feathers or things like that.

One thing that is a little annoying about the continental collision were the Atlantic islands it destroyed or damaged. The Atlantic ocean in Elfhame has a chain of islands that hold the veil, and of course there are the equivalents of the Canary Islands and things like that. The islands existed as a continent first, but it disrupted the currents, causing global environmental problems, and so the gods split the islands up and distributed them between the currents, often with many islands sinking into the ocean and hovering into the air.

(The Atlantis Plato refers to is probably this, but nobody knows exactly where the islands most closely related to the Mediterranean are because they got spread out, but tradition says they are more-or-less adjacent to the Mediterranean.)

Some of the islands were very involved with general Elfhame cultural development, while others were not, but either way, both were very important.

So now, the currents are interrupted again, and long enough to mess up the marine life seriously, which messes up the merfolk’s food supply, so they are also starving, even though people say, “They live in the water already, so they’re fine.” Not if the plankton can’t get enough sunlight and die, so the fish don’t have enough to eat, so the big animals like sharks and whales don’t have enough fish to eat, so they eat everybody.

But, anyway, also the Atlantic islands not directly damaged by the continent began flooding slightly, enough for the houses built on shore but far enough away to withstand normal storms to flood. The veil moved so much normal “veil weather” (don’t know what else to call it) became much stronger and that can cause damage from things falling out of the veil, the veil sucking things in, random electromagnetic currents, random paranatural currents which are just as dangerous, the veil tearing or falling down, or speeding up the formation of weather, all of which can affect non-Atlantic islands, but mostly affect them.

Approximately half the population of the Atlantic islands died from it and a couple of the populations of the islands were completely wiped out, or the few remaining managed to reach somewhere else and haven’t always been found yet. They can’t enough seafood to eat, the weather is weird and their islands are too small for large-scale agriculture, their trade routes are mostly gone or extremely long and difficult, and the veil is dangerous to live near.

Many of the veil workers died and so the islands have to train others to take their place, but sometimes it was an inherited lifestyle and the lines died out. Sometimes the workers continued to use the more scientific-like method, sometimes they returned to using only the traditional methods, and sometimes they did both, depending on the situation, and so there can be miscommunication and internal drama.

However, the people on the continent caught some Elfhame diseases and died. They can’t always tolerate the food, either, because their guts are used to different foods and bacteria.

           Roanoke and the other countries who have interacted with the continent also caught diseases from the continent. Both probably spread various animals and bugs around, including ones that might not be pests or invasive species in their place of origin but can become them.

Mark said, “We have room here and they don’t have houses.”

A good reason for bringing them home! It’s awfully nice of him and is the kind of thing anybody would do.

“And we have the food and the well, but there’s a boil order,” I said. “We don’t have bedding or, legally, enough bathrooms and fire exits.”

“They bring own toiletries, and I turned off gas so no fire!” Mark said.

"We have to cook.”

“I’ll build fire outside.”

I used the fire for a couple days, but we also needed heat, so Mark turned on the gas again. Marco (a different guy) checked that it was safe to use the stove.

Marcia kept going into the kitchen and cooking and being a really, nice, helpful lady. She was helpful! Really! It’s just that I don’t eat the food other people, especially strangers, cook. By the time a meal was over, we didn’t necessarily have any raw ingredients left. In a way, that’s worse than not having food in the first place.

I was the one who got to dig up the vegetables but managed to enlist some kids. Some of the children did not know vegetables came from the ground and they went on a hunger strike.

To remedy that situation, Mark, Marco, and Ted went hunting and came home with two deer Marco and Ted’s kids all know about hunting, butchering animals, etc., and it’s normal for Mark, but they brought home the adorable kind--Bambi’s mother and aunt.

The kids’ betrayed and disgusted looks made poor Mark cry, a couple guys teased him about it, and I may have accidentally and not literally sprained their brains them with reasons from history and literature why it’s fine and good for guys to cry. The whole affair escalated and caused a bit of a camp argument.

Many of the adults left during the days to go to work or clear out the house. The kids all got to take turns milking the goat, gathering eggs, and feeding the chicken and rabbits, which they loved. The novelty of washing root vegetables wore off within a couple hours and not all the parents were gung-ho about the idea in the first place, so probably, the kids who helped wanted to go play with the other kids. (I can’t blame them--it isn’t exactly an intellect-challenging job.)

Mark and I remembered that you are supposed to crack open windows and so we ran upstairs to do it and we saw the tornado touch down across the street. Then the roof got sucked off and I’m still watching parts of it land or not.

It’s only been hours since the impact, but it’s never too soon to know what happened. And if you think Halidom is bad, be glad you weren’t in Elfhame.
