The other day, my neighborhood made an announcement to facebook that there is a red-tailed hawk living here and that we need to be careful about our pets. Realistically, dogs are far too big for a hawk to be able to pick up, much less target for a meal. And outdoor cats are more likely to die via a car accident or illness rather than a bird of prey. Which even then, your cat shouldn't be outside to begin with. Stop blaming wildlife for something you can prevent!
Edit (10/1): I actually managed to see this supposed red-tail in the neighborhood, and it wasn’t even a red-tail. It’s a red-shouldered hawk :/

Pairing: Robert Irwin x female!oc
Word Count: 1062
Warning(s): Parental loss, mild language, romantic content, romantic intimacy, media attention, emotional intensity, friends-to-lovers
From the very start, Charlote Harris and Robert Irwin had a bond that didn't need explanation. Their dads were best friends, growing up, it was inevitable they'd be the same. Charlotte was barely a day old when Robert, not quite a year old himself, met her. Steve and Terri Irwin had brought him and Bindi to the hospital to meet the newest addition to the Harris family.
Robert's tiny arms had wrapped around Charlotte as of she'd always been part of his world, and with the certainty only an almost-one-year-old could muster, he'd declared - "Best friend!" - before anyone could stop him. And so, it was.
Even after both Steve and her father had passed, Charlotte never lacked for the Irwin's presence. Robert, Bindi, and Terri - but especially Robert - kept her tethered to the life that had always been so intertwined with her own. The zoo became a second home, a place of laughter and learning and, eventually, love.
Childhood
Charlotte and Robert grew up side by side. If there was a day at the Australia Zoo without the two of them, it felt incomplete. Robert taught Charlotte to identify the calls of different birds, to respect the crocodiles' power, and, most importantly, how to walk fearlessly alongside wild animals. Charlotte taught Robert patience, and the importance of listening to others - lessons he absorbed, though sometimes begrudgingly.
By the time Robert turned seven and Charlotte six, they were inseparable. Birthday parties were joint affairs, playdates double the chaos and fun. At night, when Charlotte stayed over at Robert’s, they’d lie awake whispering plans for adventures that would surely get them both grounded, and giggling quietly in the dark so Terri and Bindi wouldn’t hear.
It was simple, pure, the kind of friendship that filled every corner of a childhood with laughter, security, and belonging.
Teen Years
When Robert was fifteen and Charlotte fourteen, filming for Crikey! It’s The Irwins began. The cameras captured everything, but what fascinated the world most wasn’t Robert wrestling a crocodile or Bindi feeding a kangaroo—it was the unspoken, unshakable bond between Robert and Charlotte.
They had a rhythm together that seemed effortless. When Robert was on camera performing shows or feeding animals, Charlotte was always in the background, a steadying presence. Fans took notice, noticing the way Robert’s eyes searched for her approval, or how Charlotte’s hand would find his shoulder in a crowd. Social media buzzed with the question that no one could answer definitively: Are they just friends, or is it something more?
For Robert and Charlotte, the labels didn’t matter. They had each other, always. But even in their friendship, there was a warmth that neither could ignore, a closeness that would, in time, become undeniable.
First Kiss
It was during a crocodile show when Robert was seventeen and Charlotte sixteen that the shift began.
The show had been tricky, the crocodile more unpredictable than usual. For a moment, Robert’s balance faltered near the water, and the audience gasped, hearts in throats. Backstage, he was shaken, adrenaline still surging through his body. Normally, Charlotte would wait for him outside, clapping when he emerged, teasing him gently about his theatrics.
Not this time.
Charlotte was already there when he stumbled behind the curtain, her face pale, eyes wide with worry. Without thinking, without words, she pulled him close and kissed him.
Robert froze for the briefest moment, shock and exhilaration washing over him, before wrapping his arms around her waist, returning the kiss with all the intensity he’d been holding back for years.
When they finally broke apart, breathless, he asked softly, “What was that for?”
Her lips pressed to his again, just once, before she whispered, “I could’ve lost you just now, and I needed to do that, to tell you that I love you, before it’s too late.”
And in that moment, years of friendship, laughter, and shared grief transformed into something entirely new. Something permanent.
Adulthood
The following years were a mixture of the familiar and the exhilaratingly new. Robert continued his work at the zoo, though the world watched with fascination as the friendship-turned-romance between him and Charlotte deepened. They were often filmed together, and for once, the cameras didn’t just capture their adventures—they captured love.
By the time Robert was twenty and Charlotte nineteen, Robert had taken a temporary break from the zoo to compete on Dancing With the Stars. Charlotte, ever his constant, was there every night, cheering him on from the sidelines, a wide smile on her face, clapping until her hands were sore.
Dancing was different than handling wildlife—it was calculated, practiced, precise. But Robert thrived under Charlotte’s gaze. Her pride, her support, and her unwavering belief in him made the difference between a good performance and a great one.
At night, after performances, they would sit together, talking quietly in the hotel room or walking through city streets, the neon lights reflecting in Robert’s eyes as they laughed about small mistakes or celebrated triumphs. It was familiar—the same way they had always been together—but it was also new, exciting, a life that stretched beyond the gates of the zoo.
Charlotte sometimes teased him in the hotel mirror, brushing her fingers against his cheek and whispering, “Remember that first kiss backstage? I still get away with that.”
Robert would grin, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple, answering only, “I’d let you do it again.”
It was always enough.
Forever
The sun hung low over the zoo, casting golden light across the familiar paths where so many memories had been made. Friends, family, and a few lucky animals gathered, the air filled with laughter, quiet tears, and the scent of wildflowers. Charlotte walked down the aisle with her brother, her heart full, past the benches where she and Robert has spent so many childhood afternoons, past the enclosures that had shaped their lives. Robert, standing at the front with a grin he couldn't hide, saw her and felt that same flutter he had felt the first time she kissed him backstage, years ago. As they exchanged vows, every promise and every shared memory seemed to fold into the moment, and when they kissed as husband and wife, it felt as though the whole world had been waiting for this day.
It was 5 years after that first kiss, that Charlotte Harris and Robert Irwin became Mr. and Mrs. Irwin.
