This recent discovery is one that I sit amazed at the beauty of the music but almost more drawn into the lyrics and their meaning once I found Connie Converse’s life story. Being born in the northeast in 1924, she created music receiving little to no publicity. Playing a hand full of house shows and local appearances for friends and family plus a singular appearance in 1954 on The Morning Show on CBS with Walter Cronkite, Connie was cited as being frustrated with trying to move her work forward. Eventually becoming a professor and moving on from her music, in 1974 Connie left a series of notes, packed up her Volkswagen Beetle and was never to be seen again. This music was later put together and released in 2009.
One listen through this compilation and you will quickly feel close to Connie as her deeply personal and yet safely distant lyrics flow. The sadness rolls throughout, but her beautiful perspective of life and its many eccentricities, accompanied by her amazing ability for storytelling had me listening intently and purposefully throughout. To listen feels like you can have a small fragment of connection with Connie and her life and struggles. When listening you will begin to understand that many things that Connie faced and felt through her music are all too similar to our own lives. This is a time where music does something that no other medium can quite replicate. Something that is so deeply personal can also be so relate-able.
As soon as I discovered the story of Connie Converse, I instantly thought that a documentary would be a spectacular way to delve deeper into the story I can’t seem to stop thinking about. There has been a documentary made, though you need to request it specifically from the creator. The website looks like it hasn’t had activity in some years so I’ll keep you posted on whether I hear anything back from reaching out.
