Guys now that Athena has rebranded I feel like now is a good time to mention that I had and still don’t have any idea how to pronounce Athenahennah
Culpabilité
Parece que ahora solo encuentro a personas que se asemejan a ti.
this is mostly me conspiracyposting, but i wonder how much of the motivation behind the new art style in the KRtD remake is from all the negative reactions to star allies’ art style. because like... the style they’re going for in the remake isn’t your standard “higher polycount, better textures, better lighting!” deal you usually get in remakes, it’s a markedly different visual style. original KRtD had “realistic” (inasmuch as a kirby game ever approaches realism) soft shading, colour gradations, distinct but subtle textures on environments, things like that.
the remake on the other hand almost reminds me of those screenshots of the 2D version of kirby gcn. the characters are totally block coloured, with strong cel-shading and that characteristic floating outline. the textures even feel a little cartoonier, which is a very weird thing to notice on... cartoon characters. it’s not ugly by any stretch of the imagination but it very distinctly isn’t what KRtD’s original art was trying to do.
all of these art choices are basically the polar opposite of what SA did (while still remaining visibly Kirby). SA had its weird, ugly grey shading that was mostly compensated for with its intense ambient lighting. SA had its incredibly detailed backgrounds with a really strong depth of field blur that made most of aforesaid backgrounds impossible to see. SA had its trademark massive textures and bump maps that made it feel like you were looking at everything under a microscope. SA felt like a kirby game made in unreal engine.
a lot of these artistic decisions were scaled back in forgotten land, because outside of the character models, they were going for a genuine realism in that game, and by and large they struck a perfect middle with forgotten land’s visual identity.
so it’s really weird to see them hard swerve away from this style which would have been a perfect update of KRtD’s art, and instead choose something so different. even if it’s not because of the lukewarm reception to SA’s visuals, it’s super weird from a consumer standpoint too? the returning fans - the primary market for this game - will find it strange, and the new fans coming in off the back of forgotten land will find it strange too. it almost feels like HAL was aware of this dilemma because they updated dedede to his FL look but he now looks doubly strange in the new style!
