On July 21, Brooklyn had a few Blackouts. But in this case, Con-Ed (the power company in New York decided to turn off the lights in one neighborhood on purpose to regulate the power grid. Canarsie is a Black neighborhood, so you can take a clear guess what the reaction would be.
Before you sayĀ āthis reporter is speculatingā... I thought so to. So, hereās a link to it being verified:Ā https://gothamist.com/2019/07/22/con_ed_cut_power_brooklyn.php
In a statement, the company said that they'd made a "preemptive move to take those customers in southeast Brooklyn out of service in order to protect vital equipment and to help restore power as soon as possible." But city officials said they wanted more details from the state-regulated monopoly about how that decision was made.
Now, for those of you sayingĀ āitās just electricity,ā yes, it is. However, itās also during night time of a heatwave. Hospitals had to rely on backups, not to mention people who medical equipment drew power.
The only good news is that nothing else happened during this time. As in nothing else to report. No crime. No looting. Nothing negative. Just a concern about why Con-Ed, a company that has a monopoly on the power grid, decided to cut power on purpose.
