So I’m seeing a lot of posts by high schoolers and undergrad students who are interested in the speechpath field but kinda have a vague idea on what to do or what it takes.
So first of all if you are already know you are going to get your bachelors in COMD or COMSD, great!!!! That’s cool, so am I! Remember to volunteer with SLPs and SLTs to get a feel for the future, and also to have a mentor on hand, cause you kinda need a mentor. And keep those grades up!!! Grad school looks at ALL your grades, not just your major ones!!!! Visit your schools clinic regularly, and if your school has a NSSLHA, join! (If you haven’t done so already)
If you are not going to be majoring in COMD or COMSD, that’s great too! But if you are doing speech pathology for your masters, remember you need to do your postbacc. Some colleges and universities might let you slide, but not all of them. Don’t forget to volunteer and look for a mentor! Then you get into grad school cause you are amazing! Look for a program that does all the examination and other tidbits, because if not, it’s a lot to do on your own.
So at the end of grad school you have to do your CFY. Yeah, but you’re almost there!! Look up the requirements for the CCCs on ASHA, cause those are a cool thing to have in your name. And look on the ASHA website for what your state wants you to do for your licensing!
Okay so this is a lot, but there is so much more. This is kind of an overview to get a feel for what you have to do!
Good luck on college apps and your first few years of college!
