It's difficult. There's both some degree of ignorance (this does not imply stupidity) as well as trying to hold on to the traditions that make you who you think you are. Obviously, there's a good deal to be said about trying to utilize some of the recoverable elements of a tradition, but that informed tradition is changing for the worse in the lived conditions of 'the west'.
