āFrom a very young age, I have been exposed to entrepreneurship but I didnāt really have any interest in it until recently.Ā It started with the Startup Weekend Miri 2017, a hackathon held over a weekend all around the world. Although our team didnāt win, it sparked the idea of creating a mini Silicon Valley of sorts at Curtin Malaysia.
āTo make it a reality, we established The Founders Club, an entrepreneurship club committed to building a grassroots-level startup ecosystem involving youth communities throughout Sarawak with the help of startup enablers such as the SMA-TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub and MaGIC.
āFrankly speaking, I never thought I would be this involved in the world of entrepreneurship, especially as Iām by nature quite an introvert. Startup was a term we had never even heard of prior to the hackathon, but today, each of us is either involved in own startup or contemplating starting one. Admittedly, it has been a struggle getting our startups off the ground, but through sheer grit and determination, we have achieved much success.

āAs an international student, I was a bit apprehensive when I decided to come to Curtin Malaysia. My first concern was the food here, which I thought would very different from what I was accustomed to, but it turned out to be unfounded as many eateries offer international cuisine and the local food is incredibly good. As for language, I neednāt have worried as all students and staff on campus, and much of the local community, converse in English. This allowed me to adapt quite quickly.
āI like the University because it offers a quiet and comfortable environment to learn, play and explore. And Miri is not a huge city, so it is relatively quiet and relaxed. When I first arrived, I was met by another student from Zimbabwe, which made the transition a lot easier.
āThe locals are very friendly and genuinely interested to find out more about you. They tend to ask a lot of questions and are also prepared to answer any questions you might have.
