dunno if it’s exactly the same but i am just speaking for myself. i’m specifically south asian but i do prefer when people use asian-american and i typically use that myself because it erases distinctions between different groups. like i think when most people think of asian-americans they picture east asians and view the other countries of asia as somehow being separate so using asian-american as an umbrella term (opposed to using queer as an umbrella term) is more about feeling united and uniting different ethnic groups rather than isolating them. but like again, this is just me and coming from a place of like not being seen as actually asian by others and always being identified by the ethnic group instead.
totally! it’s definitely not a settled issue or one that will probably ever have a single answer and that makes all the sense in the world that you would do that and have found utility in identifying as asian american 💕💗
