Commuting Struggles in Manila Formed into 'Hugot'

If you’re a true Pinoy commuter and a certified millennial, you most likely have one or two “LRT Hugot” lines based on your commuting struggles.

It’s not easy commuting around the Metro. It’s too crowded, and the transportation vehicles are just not enough anymore. Just like men, their hearts can only accommodate one but they more than one person ride. See what I did there? This is a typical Filipino millennial attitude. It’s more amusing than it is irritating. Filipinos have a way to turn their struggles and pain into amusing poetry.

Here are some LRT Hugot lines that will not only be 100% relatable to but will also tickle your funny bones.

#1 “Dapat alam mo kung saan istasyon ka bababa. Parang pag-ibig, alam mo dapat kung hanggang saan ka lang.”

“You should know which station you’re getting off on. Just like in love, you should know your limits.”

You can’t ride the LRT not knowing where you need to go down. You will be lost. Just like in love, you need to know when you are needed. If you tag along for too long, you will only get hurt and lost in life.

#2  “Dumaan ka pero pinalagpas lang kita. Ngayon pinagsisisihan ko na.”

“Your path crossed mine, and I just watched you go by. Today, I regret that.”

You think you have a lot of time and options in your hand so you let this perfect one go by. Soon enough, you’ll realize how wrong you were.

#3 “Huwag mo ipagsiksikan ang sarili mo, masasaktan ka lang.”

“Don’t force yourself into a place where you don’t fit. You’ll only end up getting hurt.”

When the train is full but you really want to go home, you push yourself inside even if you can no longer be accommodated. This is similar to loving a person who doesn’t and will not love you back – you continue loving them anyway, only to be painfully rejected in the end.

#4 “Kapag mabagal ka, mauunahan ka.”

“If you’re slow to act, someone will beat you to it.”

Living in the Metro means waking up early to be able to ride the train early. If you get to the station late, a lot of people will already be there, standing in line. This is similar to confessing your love for someone – if you don’t act now, other people will.

#5 “Mahirap, mainit at masikip, pero makakarating ka din sa patutunguhan mo. Kapit lang.”

“It’s difficult, hot and tight, but you’ll reach your destination anyway. Just hold on.”

They say love is a battlefield. You have to endure the pain, and fight before you can finally claim their love. Hold on, Romeo.
