Coprinus atramentarius

two sets of mushrooms I found around my school, this is part one! the younger ones appeared more yellow-ey and the mature ones were a darker chestnut. I thought they were pretty!

These are common inkcaps (Coprinus atramentaria) - they’re turning darker as they mature as they begin to self-digest and deliquesce into a black inky substance in order to release their spores. In their younger stages, before they begin to blacker, they’re a popular edible, although they are potentially severely poisonous if eaten within a few days either side of consuming alcohol.

Inkcaps! It’s easy to see why the genuses Coprinopsis and Coprinus are referred to as inkcaps, and are easy to identify at this stage, when they’re deliquescing through autodigestion into a thick, inky liquid to release their spores. Although there may be local species I’m not familiar with, these are most likely common inkcaps (Coprinopsis atramentaria).

These fungi are edible when young (before they begin to deliquesce), although potentially deadly if ingested in conjunction with alcohol.
